  • Nokia 6700 Slide Review

    Welcome to the Nokia 6700 Slide review page.  There are 2 different 6700s out there, the 6700 Classic and the 6700 Slide. They have the similar names but are quite different phones. See the separate review on the 6700 Classic on a different page.  The 6700 Slide was released in mid-2010 with a $349 outright price tag at many stores so it is not over priced BUT not as good value as the 6700 Classic. We've have finally got to sample one in our hands and we can report that the 6700  slide is one of the best designed slider phones encountered to date (May 2010).  The curves and they way it is put together feels more expensive than the price tag.  The mostly metal body is nice to touch and the whole thing noticeably lighter than the older 6500 which the design is based on yet the slide mechanism feels as solid as the 6500. Since it has multiple 3G frequencies it will work on all mobile networks including Telstra's 850Mhz NextG BUT you have to make sure you get the version you get if purchasing outright has the correct ones. The 6700 Slide is one of the first handsets that use the latest styling theme.  It's a cool metal minimalist theme that looks better in real life than pictures.  We think it looks like a bigger version of the iPod Nano. One of the most interesting things about the 6700 Slide is the number of colors you can get the phone in (at least 6 at the time of release). It is also one of the few S60 based sliders that we think is quite stylish. In terms of software the the 6700 runs Symbian S60 so once again if you've used prior mobiles with S60 you will be instantly familiar albeit with a few improvements or additions to the interface.  The screen quality was very good too considering that it is a reasonably-cheap priced phone. It also came with word, excel and powerpoint, viewers and a very decent FLASH compatible browser. The web browser is the same one used on the E-series Nokia phones so it does work very well despite the small screen. Our latest powersaver applications also work perfectly on.  Unfortunately like all S60 based phones active animated wallpapers do not work on them. The phone works in a responsive fashion, we where impressed with the button feel and overall operation because it does feel made for a higher price bracket.  However the operating system is showing its age and the lack of fluid transitions including the not quite in sync open and closed slider event sound can be annoying. The only other issue we already have with the phone is that it does not appear to come with A-GPS chip which indicates that this is going to be a reasonably priced mobile to get. However they claim that it will use the a 600Mhz CPU which means this will be one of the fastest responding phones from Nokia. Based on our sample the 6700 Slide is a very good standard 3G phone and we can recommend it for talk, text, video calls and emails. It will work reliably and most of all keep you happy until you are ready for more or the next model comes out! However the 6700 Classic has more features like inbuilt A-GPS for about the same outright price.  The 6700 Classic is not being sold as a pre-paid yet but it shouldn't be too long now.  Once the happens, dependent on price the 6700 Classic will probably by our recommendation.   • Nokia 6700 Classic Review

    Welcome to the Nokia 6700 Classic review.  We have been meaning to do a write up on the phone for a while now (since its mid-2009 release) but for what ever reason just never gt around to finishing it. There are 2 different 6700 out there, the 6700 Classic and the 6700 Slide.  They have the similar names but are quite different phones.  See the separate review on the 6700 Slide on a different page. The 6700 Classic like it's predecessor the 6500 Classic is a decent looking phone.  It also looks better in some colours than others.  It is very thin yet has a solid feel due to the case which is largely made of metal. Overall you'll probably love the look and feel. It runs Nokia S40 operating system so if you've used a Nokia before you will feel instantly at home.  Everything has been sped up so very few lags when moving between the phone inbuilt applications.  Infinitely better than the previous 6500.  All the Apps you need are inbuilt so you won't need to install any thing unless you really want to. It will also run our animated wallpapers or screensavers!  There are also a few Nokia built and cute animations in the system to keep you happy.  The internet browser is also quite Ok for most basic internet surfing but as with all numeric keypad phones there is only so much you can do on a small screen or type in. In terms of hardware the 6700 has all that required in what we call a decent phone.  That means a decent screen, camera and video recorder, A-GPS, 3G and Bluetooth.  The only thing missing is Wi-Fi. We can't really say much more about the 6700 since it does everything that you really need for voice, video, SMS, emails, IM, some internet and more.  It is a decent mobile phone and looks good and works fast too - better in some colours.   Easily better than prior models like the 6300 and the 6500. We choose it above the other eg. SE Naite purely because it looks and feels better to use.  The 6700 should be reliable so you we think you'll be pretty happy with what is a classic mobile phone for 2010! Specifications

  • Telstra T108 Review

    Welcome to the 2010 Telstra T108 mobile phone review.  After giving it a go we can say that the T108 is another low cost mobile phone for those who only need the basics and 'no-frills' mobile experience. It may be low costs but it is better than the even cheaper T100 model.  However it is not better than the T106. As usual there is no point in writing a full review because it uses the same operating system as all the current range of Telstra branded phones.  So here's the summary:  The T108 does all the basics you need voice, video calls, text, picture messaging and emails.  With the built in browser you can get mobile versions of Facebook, Myspace and so forth.  However due to the small screen (although good image quality) and lack of a proper qwerty keypad you can't do very much. You can also purchase apps from the Telstra online store. The T108 is much better made than the T100.  The plastics feel more solid and the keys do not move about when you press them.  The white colour scheme with orange highlights actually make the phone standout amongst other cheap mobile phones. The T108 would not be embarrassing to use in public, especially with the black version which does look quite stylish. The T108 is on the small side for those with larger hands but for the kids it works very well. Overall it feel still reflects its price - The T108 is not a premium product. Technically, the T108 has the major 3G and GSM frequencies so you'll be able to use it overseas or anywhere Telstra has a roaming agreement.  Having multiple 3G frequencies means that it will work on other networks! Conclusion All up the Telstra/ZTE T108 is yet another typically basic mobile phone.  It has better quality materials than the cheaper models and thankfully doesn't feel too much like a toy.  Perfect for those who only need old school talk, text and checking their emails but not replying till later, unless you're good at old fashioned texting.   • Nokia X6 Review

    Welcome to the Nokia X6 review, the mobile phone not the odd BMW X6. Released late 2009 we think the X6 - 00 is one of the first touch screen mobile phones made by Nokia.  The X6 is also one of the nicer looking models made by the company and is considered a replacement for the older and unattractive 5800 Xpressmusic model.  The X6 is a mid-range touch screen phone. In terms of functionality the X6-00 has all the software you'd expect in a mid-range mobile phone that is focused on music and video entertainment. It is fully compatible with the Nokia's OVI store so you can download a variety of new apps, games and other content. The X6 runs the S60 or Symbian operating system so it is not the smoothest or flashy looking interface but its not too bad either.  We think the main reason is that you can modify almost everything about the user interface and change or add a variety of settings on just about anything.  In all honestly Symbian just needs a decent re-organization for it to be more user friendly and appreciated.  The common operating lags between functions is still present and annoying because we are so used to the iPhones slick interface. Apart from that works at an acceptable speed. In regards to the hardware, although there is much debate on which touch screen technology is better we don't think there is much of a difference.  The secret is the software behind the screen that makes the most difference. The X6 also features a good 5mp camera, lots of standard memory 8Gig, 16Gig or 32Gig versions and A-GPS.  The screen image quality is just as good as the benchmark iPhone. In terms of construction the phone does not look as good as it does in the pictures.  It looks plastickly although feels good in the hands.  Old school design is the best description of the X6. In terms of functionality the X6 has it all for voice, almost any type of messaging, music, video and internet browsing. Speaking of which the browser was top of the class when released a couple years ago but it is showing its age even with FLASH compatibility.  Nokia needs to update the browser quickly. Overall the X6 is a pretty decent multi-media mobile phone.  I works well and has so much standard functionality that makes the iPhone seem like a basic mobile phone discounting the apps of course.  Sure there aren't too many additional apps available for the X6 just yet but that will probably come in time? So you will probably be happy with the X6 but there are better models out there - but few touch screen phones in the price range. Specifications

  • Nokia X3 Review

    Welcome to the Nokia X3 review/information  page. The X3-00 as it is also known is a GSM only mobile is focused on music.  It is only the second phone that we known of to date that has an inbuilt FM radio antenna.  Apart from that it has also quite a few features that are a surprise since it is only a 'lowly' GSM network model. Targetted as a 'feature' phone in slider design it look pretty good being made of good plastics.  However its keypad reveals it lower end position. The operating system is S40 based so it will run our free screensaver and wallpapers perectly - they will certainly improve the X3's look very nicely! The X3 also runs the latest version of the S40 operating system so all the usual Nokia programs are there.  It is also relatively fast so you shouldn't have any complaints.  Believe it or not lots of people in developing countries which the X3 is marketed for use their phone as radios and will absolutely love this phone.  Since it also comes with a decent mobile web browser you can get data as well but at very low speeds. Overall the X3 is like older 6500 except without 3G but with more features.  So if you mainly talk, text and just check your emails then this would be a pretty good model to get. Specifications

  • Sony Ericsson Anio Review

    Welcome to the Sony Ericsson Anio review/information page.  The SE Anio is marketed as a feature and fashion phone so it has some interesting functionality included.  Again at the airport we gave it a quick test and thought it was pretty decent. For a phone with a large screen and a slider it was surprisingly light and thin.  The quality of materials is pretty good plastic too with hints at former SE design and quality.  The Anio is a touch screen phone although it has a slide out keypad.  As a bonus you also get a desktop stand and a matching bluetooth wireless headset.  The screen resolution is also pretty good too. The user experience is pretty good too, using the latest FLASH based interface, which means some nice screen transitions and animations however it is nothing exceptional.  It is also a relatively quick phone without any significant lags so overall a very good impression.  However the it is also a hybrid touch screen phone where some of the functions can be controlled by the screen but the rest rely on the hardware buttons.  It's all a bit weird like the Samsung's version so needs to be improved. All your communication options are available. SMS, Voice, MMS, Email and MS-Active Sync.  The Anio can do it all and some more thanks to what is getting to be a decent Netfront web browser with RSS capabilities. Once again like most SE phones the Anio is packed with the latest hardware for 2010.  It features 3G, Wi-Fi, DLNA, Web browser with FLASH, A-GPS and a 8Mp camera so all the latest and probably essential features of a mobile phone in the years ahead. You also get a app that allows you to use the phone as a controller for your PS3 which actually works quite well but still no match for a regular controller.  You could probably control other devices through the Anio since it has DLNA but known SE propriety bias it is unlikely to be compatible with the latest equipment - only time will tell. Overall this is something different to the iPhone and if you don't need or want to spend you cash on largely useless apps then this is a perfectly good alternative.  Just don't pay too much for it.   • Sony Ericsson Aspen Review

    Welcome to the Sony Ericsson Aspen review/information page.  The SE Aspen will be released later in 2010 as SE answer to a growing number of Qwerty based mobile phones.  However Sony have also included a touch screen which is a first for us anyway. The Aspen like most new Sony Ericsson mobile phones is packed with the latest hardware for 2010.  It features 3G, Wi-Fi, decent Web browser (WinMobile7), A-GPS and a 3.2Mp camera so all the latest and probably essential features of a mobile phone in the years ahead. Despite all that the most interesting thing about the Aspen is that it will probably run the latest version of Windows Mobile 7 underneath the Experia Panels interface.  So until Windows Mobile 7 is finally released don't expect the Aspen!  Overall looks like a great phone but there are many alternatives to choose from. Welcome to the Sony Ericsson Yari review/information page.  The Yari is another slider phone from SE and we can not understand why you'd pick this one ahead of 'the other' slider the Hazel.  We assume that it was released as a stop gap measure until the Hazel was finally relased!  It seems like a entirely regular mobile phone. We haven't managed to get our hands on a real one yet so this page is 'reserved' for the full review when that happens.  So until then here are our comments. The PR says that it is a gaming centric mobile phone with motion sensitive games and pedometer for walking/running.  Apart from that there does not seem to be any exceptional about the phone.  We reckon a perfectly acceptable mid-range mobile phone but you really need to standout with something more these days.  Perhaps a more attractive design?   • Sony Ericsson Hazel Review

    Welcome to the Sony Ericsson Hazel review/information page.  The SE Hazel is a deceptively fully functional mobile phone.  The Hazel in hindsight is essentially a repackage Elm but in a slider phone format and like its sister phone it boasts a ton of hardware and software features you would actually use. We don't know why its called the Hazel but this naming system is what SE are doing these days with all their phones. We haven't managed to get our hands on a real one yet so this page is 'reserved' for the full review when that happens.  So until then here are our comments. The Hazel is packed with the latest hardware for 2010.  It features 3G, Wi-Fi, Web browser with FLASH, A-GPS and a 5Mp camera so all the latest and probably essential features of a mobile phone in the years ahead.   Front on it looks like a regular chocolate bar phone until you see the side profile and it has a curved back!  Yes it uses real metal and rubberized plastics so should feel good in the hand and use.  Should be a decent mobile when it is released.
