  • Nokia 7100 Supernova Review

Welcome to the Nokia 7100 review. Like a few other lower end mobile phones we have been meaning to do a write up on the phone for a while now (since its late 2008 release) but once again for what ever reason just never got around to finishing it. The 7100 Supernova is a basic slider phone designed for as Nokia calls it 'emerging markets' essentially a basic mobile phone.  The 7100 in mid-2010 is priced under $129 unlocked so is reasonably good value.  We think it will drop to under $99 by the end of the year. The 7100 is a GSM only phone but capable of data thanks to EDGE and GPRS compatibility.  However do not expect high speed data.  Surprisingly it has a number of features that surprise given its position and price in the lineup.  Hardware extras such as a decent screen, Bluetooth, able to play various media formats including the capability to record radio broadcasts and a small camera. Other than that it has got a huge speaker grill at the back for reasonably loud audio output.  The main flaw is the missing expandable memory slot. In your hands it feels light and sturdy - like most Nokia phones.  The slide mechanism feels good for the price like wise the keypad and screen. The screen is not big but larger than similarly priced phones thus commendable. It runs Nokia S40 operating system so if you've used a Nokia before you will feel instantly at home.  Everything is logically located in the menu system and reasonably responsive for the price.  You can't really fault the 7100 for anything significant taking its intended purpose into account. At a stretch perhaps the tiny 4MB free memory is sad but.. However when you do compare it to phones priced a little more then its value price becomes odd.  You see for a mere $20 more (at thie time this was written) you can buy the 6600 Fold which has much more features and technology. To conclude we like the 7100 Supernova, it does everything well for a cheap mobile phone but you will be happier in the longer term with its relative the 6600 Fold.  If you have a few more dollars the 6700 Slide is also a superior mobile phone. Nonetheless the 7100 would be perfect for those who just want talk and text functions in a slider format but not value for money considering a few more dollars will get you significantly better mobile phone. • Nokia 6600 Fold Review

Welcome to the Nokia 6600 Fold review. The 6600 was release in late 2008 and is only vaguely related to the 6600i model. Initially a mid-range model it is now by 2010 it has become a bargain standard model. Construction is solid and glassy plastic with metal accents so looks better in real life then in pictures.  The curves on the phone make it look smaller than its already small size if you get the drift.  Honestly looks and feels good and will not embarrass.  We like flip phones or clamshells because they don't need extra or excessive external protective covers.  You can put it in your pocket and know that the screen and keypad will still look good and work. Firstly the 6600 is now a cheap GSM and 3G capable mobile phone.  I dare say one of the best deals out there, for a regular phone. It comes with a lot of software and hardware features like a bright OLED screens, 2 web browsers, Nokia Maps, camera with a flash, a another video call camera, good build quality and the ease of use.  Being 3G capable you can get data at decent download speeds and the Opera web browser means that even full websites can be viewed properly. Since it is S40 based it will run all our software as an animated wallpaper or screensaver we can naturally recommend it then!  It doesn't have much on board memory for new apps BUT since you can use microSD cards you should be fine  Despite having the older Nokia maps software the 6600 does not have a built in GPS hardware so you'll need an external module for true navigation. Using the phone is typically Nokia easy and fast, helped by being about to customize just about anything related to the user menus and of course ring tones and icons.  The larger keypad works well and we prefer it to slider phones.  We also thought the call quality was better than the 6500 which we current test software on.  We can also add that the signal reception is also very good - better than the 6500. Overall a very decent but standard phone for voice and video calls, SMS and catching up on Facebook and emails.  See the price history below. Sure its not as good value as the Nokia E63 but the very few are (network locked).  So if you want good flip phone the 6600 Fold is the one to get.  Purchase it outright and happiness will be long term. • Telstra T202 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the 2010 Telstra T202 mobile phone review.  The T202 can be seen in two ways, a very cheap or budget mobile phone or niche mobile.  We consider it primarily a niche model for the elderly or those with physical issues.  However due to its limited functionality and price a great solution for your child's first mobile phone. Priced under the $60 pre-paid range it is like an expensive toy too! The T202 has the biggest keys for a modern mobile phone we seen and the key selling point.  Certainly helps those who find the keys of the latest mobile phones annoyingly small.  Even the buttons on touch screen phones are not big enough.  Although the buttons are big the screen is not so large however the numbers displayed are readable for those with poor eyesight. Once again the pictures distributed do not really look like the actual phone.  In your hands the phone is like an old style TV remote control, it works well nonetheless.  We like the design - its cute! The menu navigation is simple but with few graphics and just word to describe what option you are trying to access. In terms of functionality the T202 is rather basic GSM only phone but it does meet the the needs of the target users, elderly folk. Admittedly the T202 would also suit the younger crowd as something different or would cut down on phone bills since it can't access the internet.  It can only do voice and text messages.  This is cool for the school aged kids who demand to be different and do not care about the latest fashionable phone. Telstra have determined that the users of this phone need a medical reminders and programmable SMS and phone numbers, a selectable one touch 'short cut' key, a torch and a FM radio.  Excellent battery life is a given.  We like the voice announcements when you press the numbers.  It all seems fair enough considering it can be found for under $50.  One last thing, no-one would want to steal this phone that's for sure! Conclusion So if you want a very basic phone or just could not be bothered with the latest functionality in modern phones the T202 is a perfect choice.  Talk and Text are the T202 best functions. Sure there are other basic phones to choose from but they are not designed with big buttons and an easy to ready display.  Perfect for those who can't get the hang of the latest phones or child whose parents don't want them to waste their cash on data downloads and other unnecessary but entertaining apps. • Sony Ericsson Spiro Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the 2010 Sony Ericsson Spiro review/information page. The SE Spiro is marketed as a Walkman phone so you can expect a fully functional music player on board.  However it is only a GSM phone which means it will be reasonably priced.  It hasn't been released yet so we can only tell you the basics of what's included on the Spiro. Essentially if you like listening to music or the radio then the Spiro has you catered for.  It can do the usual voice, SMS and Facebook, Twitter and email too if required but due to the lack of 3G it won't be a fast experience.  It will come in a wide range of colors too so even the boys will be happy with one. Overall this should be a reasonably cheap phone for people with basic communication needs but want fully functional music system. Specifications

  • Sony Ericsson Zylo Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the 2010 Sony Ericsson Zylo review/information page. The SE Zylo is the bigger brother to the basic Spiro.  The most important difference and inclusion is 3G capability. The Zylo is branded a Walkman phone and so has a fully functional music system.  Apart from that it appears to have all the features of the current W9xx series phones although SE have not said if it will have an A-GPS chip but they have included geo-tagging and Google maps!  Aside from music it has all the communication options that you need in a mobile phone for 2010! All the latest Sony Ericsson mobile phones use the latest Flash based navigation system and are genuinely decent regardless of model.  The OS is relatively simple and easy to learn and use.  Assuming that competitors phones have the same hardware features the only reason why you'd pick another brand is just based on how it looks and feels and price. To sum up the Zylo appears to be a very decent presumably mid-range but music focused mobile phone.  The PR images show an old school cassette tape as a animated graphics which the younger crowd will think quite quaint since they have never seen one before!  Should be decent phone. • Sony Ericsson Vivaz Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the 2010 Sony Ericsson Vivaz review page. The SE Vivaz is one of the brand's first fully touch screen so is something of a star during release.  However there are two versions of the phone the regular Vivaz and the Vivaz Pro! The regular Vivaz can be described as a high end touch screen phone in terms of standard functionality and apes the iPhone in terms of features.  Standouts: the display screen is very good, the camera is HD or high definition but only 720p which is not really full HD but it better than the rest.  Tests by much more reputable websites show that the pictures produced by the camera are close to the average still camera and the video quality is outstanding for a mobile phone.  We do post some pictures in the past but since this is a BLOG now we don't bother. First off, the feel when you get it in your hands is strange.  You expect the Vivaz to have metal accents and have a bit more weight to it.  Of course you get neither, this is a all plastic of good quality and very light mobile phone - for a touch screen. It definitely does not feel like a high-end phone. The buttons on the phone has a nice feel but not the best.  Anyway the weighting is and feel is not the selling point. The selling point is related to the HD decals on the phone! The usual user interface has been redesigned for touch screen use and at first it is different to the usual standard by other brands.  Strangely it uses Symbian OS (aka Nokia) under a heavily customized graphic interface and it does work although takes time to work out which gestures are required at which point. it is hard to tell that it is related to Nokia's S60.  Overall the interface does work well and flashy too but there are lags every so often.  It is just as fast as the iPhone or any other high end touch screen mobile phone currently available.  It does not work as well as the Apple - probably due to the way its kinetic scrolling has been designed. Another standout: there are also a number of data input options on the Vivaz and they include a onscreen Qwerty keypad, regular numeric keypad, stylus input for hand writing recognition.  This is a first we've seen and clearly able to cater to all types of people. A few standardized features will help convince you the the Vivaz will not cost too much in terms of propriety accessories!  For example you get a microSD card and microUSB! As a high end mobile phone it does have all the features you could want!  Voice, video calls, SMS, Email, IM, Facebook, Twitter, MS-Office reader, Youtube, MS Activesync compatible.  The music and video is catered for by an updated Sony music bar! The web browser is based on the standard S60 version so it does work well with FLASH compatibility built in. There are few apps compatible with the phone at the moment so inbuilt applications are very important and in this regard it does have all that you need. Overall it is something different to the iPhone and in many ways the Vivaz is better.  There is a ton of functionality programmed into the phone! The only thing missing is a more expensive feeling case.  So if you want the best camera and video phone available to date then the Vivaz is the one to get. Specifications

  • Nokia 6700 Classic Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia 6700 Classic review.  We have been meaning to do a write up on the phone for a while now (since its mid-2009 release) but for what ever reason just never gt around to finishing it. There are 2 different 6700 out there, the 6700 Classic and the 6700 Slide.  They have the similar names but are quite different phones.  See the separate review on the 6700 Slide on a different page. The 6700 Classic like it's predecessor the 6500 Classic is a decent looking phone.  It also looks better in some colours than others.  It is very thin yet has a solid feel due to the case which is largely made of metal. Overall you'll probably love the look and feel. It runs Nokia S40 operating system so if you've used a Nokia before you will feel instantly at home.  Everything has been sped up so very few lags when moving between the phone inbuilt applications.  Infinitely better than the previous 6500.  All the Apps you need are inbuilt so you won't need to install any thing unless you really want to. It will also run our animated wallpapers or screensavers!  There are also a few Nokia built and cute animations in the system to keep you happy.  The internet browser is also quite Ok for most basic internet surfing but as with all numeric keypad phones there is only so much you can do on a small screen or type in. In terms of hardware the 6700 has all that required in what we call a decent phone.  That means a decent screen, camera and video recorder, A-GPS, 3G and Bluetooth.  The only thing missing is Wi-Fi. We can't really say much more about the 6700 since it does everything that you really need for voice, video, SMS, emails, IM, some internet and more.  It is a decent mobile phone and looks good and works fast too - better in some colours.   Easily better than prior models like the 6300 and the 6500. We choose it above the other eg. SE Naite purely because it looks and feels better to use.  The 6700 should be reliable so you we think you'll be pretty happy with what is a classic mobile phone for 2010! Specifications

  • Telstra T108 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the 2010 Telstra T108 mobile phone review.  After giving it a go we can say that the T108 is another low cost mobile phone for those who only need the basics and 'no-frills' mobile experience. It may be low costs but it is better than the even cheaper T100 model.  However it is not better than the T106. As usual there is no point in writing a full review because it uses the same operating system as all the current range of Telstra branded phones.  So here's the summary:  The T108 does all the basics you need voice, video calls, text, picture messaging and emails.  With the built in browser you can get mobile versions of Facebook, Myspace and so forth.  However due to the small screen (although good image quality) and lack of a proper qwerty keypad you can't do very much. You can also purchase apps from the Telstra online store. The T108 is much better made than the T100.  The plastics feel more solid and the keys do not move about when you press them.  The white colour scheme with orange highlights actually make the phone standout amongst other cheap mobile phones. The T108 would not be embarrassing to use in public, especially with the black version which does look quite stylish. The T108 is on the small side for those with larger hands but for the kids it works very well. Overall it feel still reflects its price - The T108 is not a premium product. Technically, the T108 has the major 3G and GSM frequencies so you'll be able to use it overseas or anywhere Telstra has a roaming agreement.  Having multiple 3G frequencies means that it will work on other networks! Conclusion All up the Telstra/ZTE T108 is yet another typically basic mobile phone.  It has better quality materials than the cheaper models and thankfully doesn't feel too much like a toy.  Perfect for those who only need old school talk, text and checking their emails but not replying till later, unless you're good at old fashioned texting. • Nokia X6 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia X6 review, the mobile phone not the odd BMW X6. Released late 2009 we think the X6 - 00 is one of the first touch screen mobile phones made by Nokia.  The X6 is also one of the nicer looking models made by the company and is considered a replacement for the older and unattractive 5800 Xpressmusic model.  The X6 is a mid-range touch screen phone. In terms of functionality the X6-00 has all the software you'd expect in a mid-range mobile phone that is focused on music and video entertainment. It is fully compatible with the Nokia's OVI store so you can download a variety of new apps, games and other content. The X6 runs the S60 or Symbian operating system so it is not the smoothest or flashy looking interface but its not too bad either.  We think the main reason is that you can modify almost everything about the user interface and change or add a variety of settings on just about anything.  In all honestly Symbian just needs a decent re-organization for it to be more user friendly and appreciated.  The common operating lags between functions is still present and annoying because we are so used to the iPhones slick interface. Apart from that works at an acceptable speed. In regards to the hardware, although there is much debate on which touch screen technology is better we don't think there is much of a difference.  The secret is the software behind the screen that makes the most difference. The X6 also features a good 5mp camera, lots of standard memory 8Gig, 16Gig or 32Gig versions and A-GPS.  The screen image quality is just as good as the benchmark iPhone. In terms of construction the phone does not look as good as it does in the pictures.  It looks plastickly although feels good in the hands.  Old school design is the best description of the X6. In terms of functionality the X6 has it all for voice, almost any type of messaging, music, video and internet browsing. Speaking of which the browser was top of the class when released a couple years ago but it is showing its age even with FLASH compatibility.  Nokia needs to update the browser quickly. Overall the X6 is a pretty decent multi-media mobile phone.  I works well and has so much standard functionality that makes the iPhone seem like a basic mobile phone discounting the apps of course.  Sure there aren't too many additional apps available for the X6 just yet but that will probably come in time? So you will probably be happy with the X6 but there are better models out there - but few touch screen phones in the price range. Specifications
