  • Nokia 6300 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia 6300 review. The 6300 has been around for over 2 years now and we didn't get one initially because it didn't have 3G capabilities. We understand that most people still don't need 3G but since it does had EDGE data capabilities it can still be used for basic internet messaging. It is our opinion that the 6300 is Nokia's best GSM handset - it has everything that you need in a GSM only mobile. It can do SWF wallpapers and clocks that we're giving away, JAVA games, some web browsing, music, video, radio, camera and so forth.  It is not a surprise that its one of the most popular models available. The conservative design is made of stainless steel and feels nice, solid and thin. The keypad has a nice feel, but not as nice as the 6233. Overall we liked the look, better in real life than pictures.  Although it has a mere 7 Mb of internal memory it does have a a micro-SD slot for more memory and a 2.5 mm headphone socket. Applications on the phone is the S40 series so you won't be missing out anything.  It even has a massive 2MB JAVA heap! The interface customisation features are truly the industry best - no manufacturer does it like Nokia.  That said the only thing missing is a backlight time out!  The system works as fast so you won;t be dissapointed. The most outstanding feature of the phone is the display.  It's very bright and diamond sharp.  This is our new bench mark for screen quality.   It's lovely to look a - especially with some quality SWF wallpapers out there, including our own.   Of note also was a notification light - which warns if you have a message, call and so forth. Call quality, reception is standard Nokia, so no complaints. Battery life was again good lasting 5-7 days on left on standby most of the time. Sound quality from the speaker was average.  We haven't tried the video yet but the camera was standard Nokia 2MP so only acceptable. So as we said before if you want a GSM only mobile phone then the Nokia 6300 is truly the top of the heap unit.  It's not a multi-media phone but can do the most common formats to some point, it is more focused on calls and txt with a ton of customisation and top spec screen.  We like it and recommend it to anyone wanting a very good GSM phone. • Nokia E63 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia E63 review. Released in late 2008 this was the cheaper entry model of the E71.  Sure in the pictures it looks the same as the E71 but there are very important differences that will effect your decision to purchase.  It goes without saying that the E71 is a very popular model because it does everything that you could possibly want in 2009 and more!  So much so that it is the benchmark mobile phone to get if you can't which model you want! We've included a quick review on the website because it will run all the free screensavers and powersavers that we've made. To capitalize on the E71's success the E63 was released for those who found the E71's price unreasonable. Personally we think it's price and positioned perfectly!  Anyway it probably easier to talk abut what the E63 doesn't have rather than what it does.  So here goes: - The construction is all plastic compared to the E71. - The case is bigger and thicker than the E71. - Missing A-GPS. - The camera is only 2MP. - Missing Infra-red. - Pre-installed games. - Reduced music audio quality. - Missing pre-packaged SD memory card in some countries. What is does have is a 3.5mm audio socket so that normal headphones will work.  The screen appears to be the same too! Otherwise the E63 works exactly the same way as the E71 - which is very good. When compared to other models like it from other manufacturers - there's nothing else like it.  Sure what about  Blackberry?  Well they are still $100 more than the E63 and offer the same thing. Both do push email now so there's little difference. Overall and in isolation the Nokia E63 is a very good phone and you probably will not miss any of the omissions from the E71 unless you really need GPS on your phone.  At the same time the major problem is that it must be compared to the E71 because the price difference is quite small at release. Thankfully since then the difference has widen and some very good deals can be had for E63 now (2010).  Go for it if you must but make sure you try out the E71 at the same time to see if the price difference is worth it.  Otherwise go for which one you think looks better! • Nokia 2700 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia 2700 mobile phone review. Released in early 2009 the 2700 is placed at the higher end of Nokia's entry level range of mobile phones.  In all honestly we think it is essentially a Nokia 6300 in a cheaper body plastic body.  Sure it looks like the latest  metal based 6700 but it's not.  The styling clues however do make the 2700 look like a decent model though which should make it easy to sell if priced correctly. The 2700's all plastic construction the underlying operating software is the latest Series40 5th edition.  As a result it run the various free animated screensavers and wallpapers that we develop.  This model is quite a step up from the the base models like the Nokia 1661 etc... The only thing this phone does not have is 3G capability.  However it can connect to the slower EDGE based network for some data capability.  USB connectivity and capability to work with the Nokia Suite makes this a pretty decent phone.  Apart from that its got everything you need in standard mobile phone in 2009. We can recommend this model if you want a cheaper and reasonably featured but GSM network only phone.  It's price is highly competitive from about $99 as a pre-paid package. Expect the price to lower even further over next 12 months. Specifications

  • Nokia 5030 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the brief Nokia 5030 mobile phone review.  Released in mid 2009 the Nokia 5030 is a niche market phone that should be very popular in certain parts of the world where listening to the radio is an important pass time. For almost mobile phones it is essential to connect the headphones to turn on the radio.  The Nokia 5030 's radio can be turned on without the need to connect the headphones!  The 5030's loud speaker is actually quite good and volume reasonable for a small radio.  We assume that the area we write from has high quality radio strength so the reception was good too.  The radio function is customized from other models in the same 'entry level range'. Apart from that it is a basic Nokia mobile phone. Construction quality is pretty good with a combination of quality plastics and translucent border and a metal? keypad. Pressing the keys where quite difficult but we expect to wear in after some use. The design is modern and  personally quite attractive.  Bearing in mind this is a 'base model' phone but you would think that it was something higher up the range - until you use it of course. The best features include a bright TFT screen, a flash light, decent construction materials and the FM radio that works without the headset plugged in. The speaking alarm clock is also a feature which high end models don't even have! So if you want a radio and a phone in one unit then the 5030 is a good start.  As a phone it has all the basic mobile phone and radio functions you probably need. It may also be suitable for older folk who have the radio on BBC world news all day! Specifications

  • Nokia 1661 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia 1661 review. The 1661 (or 1662 as it is known in some countries) is another one of Nokia's cheapest mobile phones you can buy outright for not much money. At the time of this write up we saw them going for as low as $59 AUD.  It was released in early 2009 as a 'Emerging market model'.  This is basically a call and text phone with a fantastic battery life. The Nokia 1661 is a much better model than the Nokia 1209 previously reviewed as use for a first mobile phone.  A little bit more expensive (not much more) but gives you more features and probably keep you happy longer than the cheaper model.  Construction quality and materials are better than even lower models.  All the functionality is presented in the very easy to use and traditional Nokia icon based menu system. The best features include a bright TFT screen, a flash light, decent construction materials and also a FM radio.  The speaking alarm clock is also a feature which high end models don't even have!  The calender with reminders is a bonus.  The worst 'feature' is the fake USB port so there isn't any data connectivity but then no phones in this price range have true PC connectivity either. Just remember it is still a very basic phone. So if you need a first mobile phone for early teens or a spare one then the Nokia 1661 is probably a good choice.  For the low outright price it is a pretty good deal.  If you are getting the phone as a pre-paid package then expect an even lower price! • Nokia 1209 Review

Welcome to the Nokia 1209 review.  The 1209 is probably the most basic and cheapest mobile phone you can probably buy new and 'outright'.  The 1209 has features top end mobile phones had 6 years ago!  Of course in 2008 we expect a lot more.  You can buy one from as little as $19 outright if you look hard enough. However you must remember that the 1209 is bargain bin material that would probably not look out of place in your average shopping center isle right next to the bargain toilet paper!  Mind you in some parts of the world namely developing countries this is amazing technology and no-one can knock that. The Nokia 1209 is mainly sold completely unlocked or outright and even as a pre-paid.  You can make calls and text messages and a few customization features like backgrounds and ring tones and a flash light.  There's not much memory for saving anything though.  It does not even have a FM radio. It's also got a tiny colour screen with ancient CSTN LCD display.  Using one of these phones really shows how far technology has progressed in such a short time. Overall we can see a few of uses for the Nokia 1209 in most parts of the world.  A first phone for the kids to stay in touch or an emergency phone when your expensive main mobile phone breaks down or you are not vaguely technically inclined and don't need to do anything more than talking.   There isn't much more to choose from at this end of the 'purchase' outright phone market. Mind you if you afford a few more dollars the models to choose from expand dramatically.  Just check out the brand pages for more! Specifications

  • Nokia 5130 XpressMusic Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia 5130 XpressMusic review.  It was released earlier in 2009 but we only got a chance to see it in the flesh while comparing the T106 recently.  The Nokia 5130 XpressMusic is considered a lower end phone in terms of pricing.  Although not comparable to the Telstra T106 we did anyway! It runs the Nokia's mass market S40 operating system so - the screensaver and powersavers we develop will work on them!  As far was we are concerned the S40 is a fast and simple operating system. It's the small brother to the similarly named and more expensive 5310.  Hence the functionality is limited even compared to other higher end S40 based mobiles.  However what you do get is a still reasonably featured phone for playing music, making calls and texting, organizing your life including a fully featured alarm so you can wake up on time for everything.  Perfectly targeted to the younger crowd. The 5130 XpressMusic is not an iPod Touch by any means but as a standard mobile phone focused on playing music it does a great job. The standout feature is a proper 240x320 pixel screen that looks good.  It also has the industry standard 3.5mm earphone jack and the sound processor is music focused.  Although it does have a web browser this is not a 3G phone so your experience will be a bad one.  At least it has something for emergencies. There is not much else we can say about it - typical good but entry level Nokia mobile phone.  So if you want a phone that can do most things and want your music to sound good then this model may suit. However there are better ones out there that do much more for around the same price the catch is that the models are older than this one.  Eg. 6300.  Older is sometimes better. If you are considering the 5130 it may also be wise to look at alternatives from other manufacturers. Specifications

  • Nokia N97 Review

    hyp4mhz
The Nokia N97 is the current top of the range model you can get in 2009.  The design is different from most of the  others in that it has a tilting screen and PC like keyboard.  This is a short review of the N97 because that's not our focus at the present. It also runs our screensavers and powersavers BUT the ones we currently have are not optimized for the N97 huge screen size.  We'll definitely make one specific for the phone in the near future. What the phone can do or its functionality out of the box is what this phone is about and here it does not disappoint.  Its packed with every current feature you could possibly want in a mobile phone at present.  a nice big screen with various statuses including email, weather and news.  Every productivity application you could want in a mobile computer like PDF reader, MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint editor, A-GPS leading edge mobile web browser that easily displays Flash content and the list goes on and on. Unfortunately there are certain issues with N97.  Although top of range it is made largely made of plastic and while the quality of the materials are good but its not the best .  The tilting mechanism works with a solid click, likewise the keyboard and touch screen and there's a nice metal surround but it feels dated compared to the often compared Apple iPhone.  In a top range phone you expect construction quality as well as functionality.  They should have used the designers of the Vertu range of phones from the start. Other issues include an OS which is simply not as consistently smooth as the iPhone and that the 3rd party apps on the N97 are not as clever.  In time I'm sure they will improve but for 2009 it does need a bit more work.  Finally, the seemingly 'dual' menu system took us a while to get used to. The N97 is a Symbian S60 based operating system means that it is stable phone and it includes multi-tasking.  Multi-tasking meaning that you can run multiple programs at the same time.  The iPhone does this is part but not the full feature like the N97.  It is strange how those saying how multi-tasking phones are the future yet with the event of the iPhone they have strangely gone quiet. Another issue is the complexity of all the functionality packed into the phone.  The N97 is so customisable that it makes it difficult to use if you are not familiar with other Nokia phones.  Thing to can change include the overall theme, the media that can play almost any format, the changeable fully featured mobile web browser, the system that includes all current forms of electronic messaging including instant messaging it is all there.  The main screen widgets are a upcoming industry standard I think... It is just more difficult to find the function you want.  Admittedly once you get used to it it all works really well. You can get additional and free applications for the N97 through Nokia's OVI store or the numerous internet stores.  Unfortunately since they don't individually monitor application code some of the apps are not a reliable as they should be.  It is tied heavily to the internet like most top end phones and so you better have a decent data plan. We noticed the standout feature of the phone is the call quality.  You and your caller sound perfectly clear easily superior to virtually all the phones we tried.  The really showed how the Apple iPhone's call quality was noticeable bad. To conclude the Nokia N97 is probably the only really fully featured phone out of the box you can get by any manufacturer.  It does have a few flaws caused by the only initial menu system but with familiarity it works.  We won't bother with too many specifications since it honestly has everything most people could possibly want for 2009 anyway.

  • Nokia E71 Review

Welcome to our review of the Nokia E71. (First time we've managed to post a review relatively quickly.) The E71 is the replacement for the relatively popular E61i release about 12 months ago. It's the only Qwerty keyboard based mobile phone made by the company. Like it's predecessors the E71 is an amalgamation of all Nokia has learnt to date since the introduction of the original E61. First impressions are excellent. The E71 looks fantastic! Construction wise, it uses real metal but this time thinner than the past models to save weight. Smoked stainless steel and high quality plastics where necessary really add to the impression of expense and class. It's also very thin. It's seems more just 1 generation away from the slate like predecessors. We liken the new model as the RAZR of the QWERTY keyboard phones, except that the quality of the Nokia is noticeably superior. No creaky panels or detail that would fade. The keys have a nice quality feel when you press them. Pictures do not do this phone justice. Nokia has packed so much technology in such a small size in the E71. It features every single wireless and wired connection option you could want: Wi-Fi, Infrared, bluetooth, USB, GSM and 3G. Yes it has Infrared! So we can still exchange contacts with older phones or use it as a modem and even Sync with other computers without all that mucking around with bluetooth pairing and USB drivers. We can still run our handy universal TV/Video/Stereo remote controllers. Infrared rules. Other features (entertainment) include and crisp 320x240 pixel screen, dual cameras/video, autofocus, flash, barcode reader, 2.5mm headphone socket for the FM (RDS) radio and internet radio, VOIP, voice recorder, MP3 and MP4 player and the list goes on. Fantastic considering that this is not a dedicated multi-media phone! Since this is an E series phone there are a ton of work applications that are pre-loaded. Word, Excel, Powerpoint editors, dictionary, Notes, ZIP, PDF, wireless printer connectivity, clocks, calendar, unit convertors, VPN and of course Internet. The most amazing feature is the built in GPS. Nokia's Maps software has been updated to the point that I think it is better than Google Maps for your mobile. You can download the maps for free but it doesn't tell you the directions. You have to subscribe for voice and trip guidence - fair enough. Google maps requires constant 3G or wi-fi connection and you don't get locations like shops, hotel and so forth.  Nokia Maps has the lot like regular GPS systems! The A-GPS system used on the E71 is actually quite good.  It picks up the GPS satellites from turn on as quick as the TomTom One or quicker.  (Average of 10 secs)  Like the TomTom though if you have traveled a significant distance from the last time you used the GPS it takes a little more time to lock on.  That said you must make sure the A-GPS (uses the network towers but not data) is turned on otherwise it can take several miutes to get a proper fix on your location. The next amazing feature (for 2008) is the web browser. Nokia has updated it from the past versions and it worked on ALL websites we tried - to date. It even shows Flash content and Youtube on the same screen. The first mobile phone browser to do this! Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoomail and all news sites worked! The only problem we encountered where with WordPress BLOGS - the editing of text when scrolling is required is a hit and miss. This can be overcome by writing your entries in the notepad and cutting and pasting into the browser. Nokia's web browser is better than the one on the iPhone or iTouch -at least on this phone. The only short fall is that the E71's screen is smaller than previous models. (Update: After installing the latest phone software we discovered that the E71 can play FLV files from Youtube without additional software!  We knew the web browser could already do this but it brilliant that it can play them out of the browser as well.  Give it go - we really like this phone and you probably will too!) New and useful features worth a mention on the E71 include data encryption, Music store, Podcasting, Standard bar and QR code readers. Nokia's thrown in MS Messenger LIVE and Yahoo GO applications so you can IM all you want. The only thing missing from prior models is the emulated Blackberry compatibility. We where also surprised to find that Nokia has included a 2GIG memory card as part of the sales package! We also liked the remote auto lock feature so that if you lose your phone you can send it an SMS to lock it. You have to set this up and your passwords - so do it! You never know when you could lose your phone. As for operating speed, Nokia has clearly improved the S60 interface's speed, menu navigation is immediate, and running programs are noticeably faster than prior models. It only seems to pause when starting up JAVA based programs but this applies to all phones we've ever tried. Overall excellent. Conclusion: The E71 is a great phone! I dare say it's the best Nokia mobile phone out of the entire range - at least in July 2008. Fast, looks good with a ton of functionality. Sure menu navigation is old hat and getting crowded due to the huge amount of features but that applies to all E and N series Nokia's. If tossing up between the new N series phones have a long hard think because the E71 does 90% of what the N series in terms of entertainment but 110% of day to day functions. Nokia should be applauded as to how they managed to cram all the hardware and software into such a small mobile phone. If you want the most complete mobile phone to date in a elegant design then buy one no need for any decision making needed. If you've got a E61 or E61i it's a no brainer you will be impressed. Note: Nokia has included a few 'extras' in the packaging this time! We a custom hard/slip case, a 2.5mm headset with mic, micro USB connector and a wrist lanyard. The thing we most liked was the screen protector that didn't hide any of the screen's icons as per prior models. The case and screen protector are hard to purchase separately so don't lose them!
