  • Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Review

    Welcome to the 2015 Samsung Galaxy Note 4 review. Finally we managed to post our review on the Galaxy Note 4 because we thought we'd already done one!  After a very long tenure with the Sony Xperia Z1 Ultra it was clear to us that a phone with a large screen is the way of future. Maybe not as big as the on on the Z Ultra but more the screen size on the Galaxy Note 4 and that is exactly we bought one. The Galaxy Note 4 is not a cheap phone with a RRP price of around $900. However with the high price also means it has top specification - and indeed it has arguably the best specification of any mobile phone on the planet - at the time of this post. In terms of construction the Galaxy Note 4 is very well made. The chiseled metal surround and glossy screen make you want to touch it. The rear is a rubberised plastic finish which happens to removable and is the point of the Note 4. The real panel fits perfectly although uses a material unlike any we've collectively touch before which is a first. Overall the conservative design looks good and feels very good thanks to the extra weight and worthy of the prices tag. The design is business class rather than pop candy as per the iphone6 Plus for example. In terms of hardware the Galaxy Note 4 is equipped with all the latest tech hardware you can possibly dream of in 2015. Very few so called reputable websites point out this simple fact. It is the most advanced mobile phone on the planet - even next to the new Samsung Galaxy S6! We can't say much more. So if your shopping based on specifications alone then you do not need to read any more reviews because the Galaxy Note 4 has everything and yes it is future proofed for the next 2 years... For example the QHD screen has more pixels than your regular LCD computer and the first 4K video camera resolution can't be fully appreciated on 99% of displays on sale to date. Other features which literally hammer the tech advantage over the other phones is the inclusion of the Heart rate, UV, oxygen etc sensors and the multi-purpose infrared remote control. The Note 4 is in a specification class on its own for the moment. In terms of use the Galaxy Note can be really easy or really complex. Apart from being fast left in default setup the Note 4 works as good as any other phone, if you haven't setup a new phone in awhile then it is just as easy as a Windows phone or iPhone. However you can really customise your experience on the Note 4 to any level you want to which makes this a key selling point. Lots of standard Apps on the phone including our favourite infrared remote control program now called Smart Remote that makes it the easiest universal remote control we've ever used. No need for weird bluetooth settings or wi-fi etc.. to get your phone to control things through the proven method infrared. The ability to add a microSD card is fantastic. The live widgets which are the key feature of any Android based phone works well on the large screen. Note that despite the larger screen the text has not been proportionally reduced like on the Sony Ultra Z hence everything is nice and readable.  The S pen feature is a great idea for workers, it is faster than any keypad even with swipe activated. The heart rate monitor, UV oxygen sensor on the back of the Note 4 for health trackers are great additions including the strangely hyped non-activty reminders. No other large screen mobile phone has the lot like the Note 4. To conclude, if you want a mobile phone or smart phone with the lot in a still easy to handle size, the ultimate burger so to speak of mobile phones - the Galaxy Note 4 for the time being is THE model to get. It can do everything you could possibly want in a mobile phone in 2015. There is literally nothing else in the class to compare it against. Specifications

  • Samsung S5 Active review

    Welcome to the 2014 Samsung Galaxy S5 Active quick review. Our recent trip to Japan saw us trying out the latest ruggedised phone from Samsung, begin the S5 Active. Now we did much thinking and realised that all the current crop of 'ruggedised' phones should really be how regular phones are designed. That is phones that can be used in doors and outdoors without worrying about a few drops of water or dust and indeed accidentally.  That said the S5 Active is not indestructible but made with real more hard wearing materials than the regular Galaxy S5 and easily better than the iPhone 6 that has the potential to die when you leave your air conditioned car or plane to a humid environment - for instance. In terms of construction the S5 Active looks and feels very good but we feel designed to be held by guy we think its just the colour scheme of the phone we tested which was the  military style camouflage scheme. In a regular grey it stands out as being more like a prop from a sci-fi movie. The S5 Active feels solid yet light enough considering the extra bumper protection system. We're not sure how much actual metal there is on the phone but to be honest it didn't matter. We have no complaints about anything and neither will you and we regard it as one of best made and impressive looking phones available in 2014. In terms of hardware features the S5 Active has everything you could possibly want in 2014. It has things like infra-red blaster perfect of universal remote control, heart rate monitor, replaceable battery and even a micro SD slot. It is superior than the previous Galaxy S4 Active which was short changed on specs compare to the regular S4 of the same time. When compared to the regular Galaxy S5 we think the Active is the better looking phone. Since both have the same top end features In terms of use the Galaxy S5 Active is very good. We didn't find the interface daunting apart from the various update and status notifications seemingly more numerous than other operating systems. In fact the settings screen was more accurately described than on the iPhone OS for instance but Windows Phone 8 OS settings is better than either. Samsung's Andriod OS appeals to those who want flexibility, customisation options and ability to do things that you can only dream of on an iPhone! However it has also become clear that if you want simplicity go for any Windows Phone 8.1 which easily beats the iPhone or Android. The Samsung Galaxy S5 Active is a very appealing smartphone in terms of looks and feel. It also has all the features of a top end smartphone that you can use without worrying too much about weather conditions and in this sense it is unique. All other phones have lower spec hardware and require additional, bulky and largely unattractive cases although admittedly providing very good protection to deal the day to day use. We definitely like the the S5 Active even more because it doesn't come with any PR that goes too far. Specifications

  • Samsung Galaxy S4 Review

    Welcome to the 2014 Samsung Galaxy S4 review. We know our quick review is a bit late but since the new S5 is due to be released and that our latest benchmark phone is a Z Ultra we decided to do this write up. Furthermore we know that the S4 will be around as a 'budget' model for at least another year or two! So if you've being holding off here's our review on one of the best mobile phones for sale a the moment. In terms of construction the S4 looks cheap than its competitors for its price tag BUT it is a solid phone. It is the glossy back and seemingly slim frame that disappoints. That said the vast majority of phone users including iPhone almost always purchase cheap looking and generally tacky protectors. So in the end overall good but not fitting of a top end phone we expect. Of course thanks to the design its signal reception is notably better than metal/alloy phones. Only Nokia seems to be able to construct plastic phones are are both sleek aka expensive and hard wearing. In terms of hardware the Galaxy S4 has everything you could possibly want in 2014. Of note is the ever useful IR Blaster or infrared for controlling TV, the highly sensitive 5 inch touch screen and very good image and colour reproduction. There are many standard Apps that utilise its hardware features that it is quite daunting to start off with. The sound quality is also pretty good on both ends of the line. There is not much to complain about or that it is deficient in any way . The camera is one of the best out there too according to more reputable publications that said the images we took and examined are just as good as any other bar the Nokia 1020. The expandable memory so means you can store and view what ever content you want! In terms of use the Galaxy S4 is good and bad. Good and bad because what makes it good can be bad - in that it is easy enough to use but there are so many standard features that novice Andriod OS users will be over whelmed. The Galaxy S4 does require a short introduction before leaving the store especially if you've never had a smartphone before. For novice users we simply say to buy a Windows phone instead  which are much easier to use than the iPhone or Android. Nonethless the S4 is slick and fast and really shows those upgrading in particular, how quickly Android has matured. If you are youthful in mind and want a phone you can customise and can do everything you could possibly want than this is really all you need. Samsung Galaxy S4 Vs Sony Z Ultra: Ignoring size for obvious reasons the S4 has more hardware features than the Z Ultra. The Galaxy S4 screen is also brighter which help readability in sun light. The S4's camera is also very good! However where the Sony wins is in terms of speed - the Z Ultra is a noticeably fast phone. The lack of standard bloatware on the Z Ultra helps present a very convincing demonstration of the Android OS. If you want a mobile phone or smart phone with the lot in a easy to handle size, the Big Mac so to speak of mobile phones - the Galaxy 4S for the time being is THE model to get. It can do everything you could possibly want in a mobile phone in 2014. When it does become the 'budget model' there is no reason why its shouldn't very well indeed - if it's priced right!   • Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus Review

    Welcome to the 2013 Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus mobile phone review. The Galaxy Ace Plus is priced under $200 at most retail shops and an upgrade to the original Ace. This Ace Plus version is equipped with a faster but older 1Ghz processor and some other enhancements. However in comparison to the equally priced Nokia Lumia 520 the Ace Plus isn't quite as good... In terms of construction the Ace Plus is just like the original although it takes a side by side look to tell the difference which revels a larger screen and size. It is well made in an industry standard way for this price range. In terms of specifications the low resolution screen is a turn off because its low resolution and hence washed out. It as an older 1Ghz CPU  which works OK. Apart from that there's is nothing really standout which is barely acceptable. There are better specified mobiles or even less that work better... In terms of use the Galaxy Ace Plus still uses the old Android 2.3 OS which means not all the latest Apps will work but the majority o f the popular ones for social networks will. The smoothness of the interface is not up to the latest versions which shows how far Android has come in the space of a few years. Most of the features but a few key features like hotpots appeared to be missing. Overall and in isolation the Ace Plus is an Ok sort of phone but when compared to others in the price range in particular the Microsoft OS based  Lumia 520 it shows its age. The Ace Plus needs the latest OS and a better screen for it to be any good and even then the 520 (as an example) is still better except for the number of 3rd party apps available for it.   • Samsung Galaxy Ace Review

    Welcome to the 2013 Samsung Galaxy Ace mobile phone review. The Galaxy Ace is not a top end phone as its name implies or even mid range, we call it just above entry level model smartphone. When released back in 2012 we checked it out but didn't see any point in writing up our review because the Ace did not impress and in 2013 it still doesn't. No regular folk it is best described as an average sort of mobile for those who don't want to do demanding things with their phone. In terms of construction the Ace is not too bad. Hard shiny plastics all round but it is sturdy and will take some heavy knocks thats for sure.  The price hovers around the $200 mark which in terms of hardware specification is good, unfortunately it's not that good. The biggest issue is the screen resolution it is quite plain to look at and low resolution - if only it had a higher screen resolution the Ace would be an Ace and a feature that makes it stand out amongst, for example the cheaper Telstra/ZTE and HTC models at about the same price. In terms of use the Galaxy Ace uses the 2 year old Android 2.3 which while simpler to use than the version 4 the top end gets hence it is missing the ability to run the latest apps and a number of settings including the hotspot feature as examples. The Ace's navigation is a bit laggy and you can 'feel' the cheaper CPU trying to keep up with you. Overall it is Ok to use. Overall its an OK sort of phone for an OK sort of price. It will do almost anything you want but just not a quickly as the higher end models. If you only use the Galaxy Ace for txt, voice calls, Facebook Twitter than Ace is pretty good. It's barely OK for web browsing or games. The Ace is not quite low end but it's not mid range either perhaps a starter smartphone? Then again the cheapest iPhone 4 on a pre-paid package is only a few dollars more...  which is what we'd go for and you probably would too! Specifications

  • Samsung Galaxy Note II Review

    Welcome to the 2013 Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7000 series review. We liked the original Galaxy Note - so with great anticipation, waited till this second version before deciding our next major mobile phone purchase. The original Note and the replacement Note II when this was review written and was the largest mobile phone you can buy. Some popular commentators called too big to be a useful phone and poured scorn claiming their enlighten senses were more aligned to the mass market and the future! Of course they where completely wrong and the concept continues to prove highly popular. You see mobile phones and smart phones are now the primary source of computer and telecommunications device for everyone. In countries with developed infrastructure these devices do the work we used to do on PCs eg. internet banking, reading the news and emails a mere 5 years ago. As we age and our eyes fade and our bodies become bigger along with wanting more means we are happy with a large but not too large device to carry around! In terms of hardware the Samsung Note II is and improvement over the original. The 3D effect on the grey version is quite nice. The build quality is very good despite being largely plastic it does feel sturdy enough for daily use. even without a case. The case also has a slot for the S-pen which works well although it took some time to work out which apps would work with it. The large 5.5 inch Note II screen produces less saturated images than the original and can be read in bright sunlight easily enough. The size is really quite nice allowing for less typing errors and is really comfortable to hold too. Try one your self and see what you think. In terms of performance and use the Galaxy Note II is quick and very responsive.  Unlike the original there are next to no lags on the interface design running various apps and widgets. We can't really say much more since it is literally packed with everything you could desire on a smartphone in 2013. The camera is a bit of a let down though. All it really needs is a infrared to be able to change channels on the TV or stereo. You could complain that there are just too many settings to play with but then the iPhone has just as many! The Note II has or can have any thing you want including a FTP server - not a mistake! To conclude, we like the Galaxy Note 2 even more than the original. Definitely worth a look if you're a pretty active person who just wants to do everything on the go and on a big screen rather than stuck to your PC. It's now much easier to actually write a novel on it and watching movies in virtually any format you want along with games and internet browsing this pretty much all you need. Definitely recommended!     Welcome to the 2013 Samsung Galaxy S3 review. At the time of writing the Galaxy SIII I9300 series has been on sale for nearly 6 months and arguably the best Android based phone you can buy. Lots have been said and there are plenty of in-depth reviews that you can read. We've read them checked out the benchmarks and agree so have nothing to add to the world. So Like the iPhone we can only point out the reasons why you shouldn'y buy the Galaxy S3! - Requires Gmail address with all your personal data so you need a separate email for your phone if you want to maintain any privacy. - The Apps are not vetted as thoroughly as Apple's so you can be a victim. - Build quality while good could be much better. As plastic does its quite good to look at. - Standard Samsung enhancements are not attractive to look at. - A bit more difficult to setup and use due to the number of customisation options. - Google Play needs more work. - The screen colours are too saturated. - Still not as smooth as other OS. Overall the Galaxy S3 does have less issues if not using the advanced functions than the iPhone and that's probably why its the better choice for most people. Like the iPhone there is more great features than the problems! One of the most important features in being about to see Flash content! Just remember that the Galaxy S3 is one of the best mobile phones are the moment for a variety of reasons and would be our choice if it hadn't been for the new Windows 8 phones just released!   • Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Review

    Welcome to the 2012 Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 review. The Galaxy Tab 2 is the replacement for the original TAB which is we think was a pretty good tablet to begin with. You CAN NOT possibly mistake it for Apple's iPad unless you are just plain brainless - let's face it even a blind person can tell the difference. (Surely I don't need to explain!) We are not anti-Apple just tired of hype and monopoly style tactics and lack of any innovation for the past 2 years unless you call bouncing icons - just like what Microsoft used to do. Do something truly innovative like the original iPhone. The Android OS has been customized by Samsung and for tablet use, so its missing mobile phone functionality even in the 3G version. It also does not have infrared which is disappointing. The TAB2 10.1 construction is plastic with metal like panels but it feels solid in the hand. Until they can make plastic feel like metal this perception or at least educate us that plastic does not always mean cheap the iPad will have the upper hand in this area. Since almost everyone will purchase a cheap plastic cover for their tablet especially the iPad we DO NOT see the construction material as a disadvantage. The best part of the Android and the TAB 2 is the ability to expand its user memory by a microSD card AND the ability to play virtually any video file format DViX, MP4, FLV or whatever common format you want. No need to convert or understand just copy the file over and the play it. Sure you may need additional software but the Google Play store has everything you need just download the most popular player. The only thing missing is the phone functionality even if you have a 3G version. The interface is smooth although it depends on whether your running a cool animated wallpaper or have widgets accessing the internet for updates. In this situation there can be micro lags as they update but left alone and without these interactive widgets running the interface is pretty slick. The standard web browser is noticeably faster than Safari on the iPad left is standard settings too! There are plenty of customisation settings to play with and all are quite logical. However it will take a longer time to get used to all the available features but at least they are already there. Overall the Samsung Galaxy TAB 2 is a very good tablet and if the 10.1 inch size is what you're after then this is perfect. There is room for improvement in that a faster CPU and future software upgrades will no doubt address. It is a little expensive at this point in time if can still buy one... Specifications

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Review

    Welcome to the 2012 Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 GT-P3110 review. The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 is the 2nd update to the original Tab 7 version, the 7 Plus being the 2nd update which was not available globally. The Tab 2 7.0 is a slight downgrade to the Plus version in some ways but many will not really notice any difference due the same up to date Android OS. Australia's version is called the GT-P3110 which includes the 850 Mhz Telstra 3G frequency but missing infrared so be careful which version you order. The Tab 2 7.0 construction is very good with a nice curved back, minimal gaps and great finish.  Sure plastic doesn't look 'expensive' as per the iPad but lets face it everyone hides their tablet with an often hideous case. In terms of hardware features the faster dual core CPU, more efficient electronics and updated OS does make the tablet work smoother with a flashier interface. The Tab 2 may not have as many features of say the Samsung Galaxy S3 but it is much cheaper and certainly a match than any of it's few competitors. The Tab 2 7.0 is easily a match for the current iPhone 4S in terms of functionality but obviously bigger and more useful than the Amazon Kindle or any other tablet without phone functionality at this point in time. We like the TAB 2 due to its smoother interface and speed but since our original TAB is still working perfectly I think we'd wait till the next version. If you have not got the TAB then the TAB 2 is a perfect starting point. Final words? The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 is the new and  best 7 inch tablet and mobile phone you can get for a great price too.
