  • Nokia 6700 Slide Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia 6700 Slide review page.  There are 2 different 6700s out there, the 6700 Classic and the 6700 Slide. They have the similar names but are quite different phones. See the separate review on the 6700 Classic on a different page.  The 6700 Slide was released in mid-2010 with a $349 outright price tag at many stores so it is not over priced BUT not as good value as the 6700 Classic. We've have finally got to sample one in our hands and we can report that the 6700  slide is one of the best designed slider phones encountered to date (May 2010).  The curves and they way it is put together feels more expensive than the price tag.  The mostly metal body is nice to touch and the whole thing noticeably lighter than the older 6500 which the design is based on yet the slide mechanism feels as solid as the 6500. Since it has multiple 3G frequencies it will work on all mobile networks including Telstra's 850Mhz NextG BUT you have to make sure you get the version you get if purchasing outright has the correct ones. The 6700 Slide is one of the first handsets that use the latest styling theme.  It's a cool metal minimalist theme that looks better in real life than pictures.  We think it looks like a bigger version of the iPod Nano. One of the most interesting things about the 6700 Slide is the number of colors you can get the phone in (at least 6 at the time of release). It is also one of the few S60 based sliders that we think is quite stylish. In terms of software the the 6700 runs Symbian S60 so once again if you've used prior mobiles with S60 you will be instantly familiar albeit with a few improvements or additions to the interface.  The screen quality was very good too considering that it is a reasonably-cheap priced phone. It also came with word, excel and powerpoint, viewers and a very decent FLASH compatible browser. The web browser is the same one used on the E-series Nokia phones so it does work very well despite the small screen. Our latest powersaver applications also work perfectly on.  Unfortunately like all S60 based phones active animated wallpapers do not work on them. The phone works in a responsive fashion, we where impressed with the button feel and overall operation because it does feel made for a higher price bracket.  However the operating system is showing its age and the lack of fluid transitions including the not quite in sync open and closed slider event sound can be annoying. The only other issue we already have with the phone is that it does not appear to come with A-GPS chip which indicates that this is going to be a reasonably priced mobile to get. However they claim that it will use the a 600Mhz CPU which means this will be one of the fastest responding phones from Nokia. Based on our sample the 6700 Slide is a very good standard 3G phone and we can recommend it for talk, text, video calls and emails. It will work reliably and most of all keep you happy until you are ready for more or the next model comes out! However the 6700 Classic has more features like inbuilt A-GPS for about the same outright price.  The 6700 Classic is not being sold as a pre-paid yet but it shouldn't be too long now.  Once the happens, dependent on price the 6700 Classic will probably by our recommendation. • Nokia 6700 Classic Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia 6700 Classic review.  We have been meaning to do a write up on the phone for a while now (since its mid-2009 release) but for what ever reason just never gt around to finishing it. There are 2 different 6700 out there, the 6700 Classic and the 6700 Slide.  They have the similar names but are quite different phones.  See the separate review on the 6700 Slide on a different page. The 6700 Classic like it's predecessor the 6500 Classic is a decent looking phone.  It also looks better in some colours than others.  It is very thin yet has a solid feel due to the case which is largely made of metal. Overall you'll probably love the look and feel. It runs Nokia S40 operating system so if you've used a Nokia before you will feel instantly at home.  Everything has been sped up so very few lags when moving between the phone inbuilt applications.  Infinitely better than the previous 6500.  All the Apps you need are inbuilt so you won't need to install any thing unless you really want to. It will also run our animated wallpapers or screensavers!  There are also a few Nokia built and cute animations in the system to keep you happy.  The internet browser is also quite Ok for most basic internet surfing but as with all numeric keypad phones there is only so much you can do on a small screen or type in. In terms of hardware the 6700 has all that required in what we call a decent phone.  That means a decent screen, camera and video recorder, A-GPS, 3G and Bluetooth.  The only thing missing is Wi-Fi. We can't really say much more about the 6700 since it does everything that you really need for voice, video, SMS, emails, IM, some internet and more.  It is a decent mobile phone and looks good and works fast too - better in some colours.   Easily better than prior models like the 6300 and the 6500. We choose it above the other eg. SE Naite purely because it looks and feels better to use.  The 6700 should be reliable so you we think you'll be pretty happy with what is a classic mobile phone for 2010! Specifications

  • Nokia X6 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia X6 review, the mobile phone not the odd BMW X6. Released late 2009 we think the X6 - 00 is one of the first touch screen mobile phones made by Nokia.  The X6 is also one of the nicer looking models made by the company and is considered a replacement for the older and unattractive 5800 Xpressmusic model.  The X6 is a mid-range touch screen phone. In terms of functionality the X6-00 has all the software you'd expect in a mid-range mobile phone that is focused on music and video entertainment. It is fully compatible with the Nokia's OVI store so you can download a variety of new apps, games and other content. The X6 runs the S60 or Symbian operating system so it is not the smoothest or flashy looking interface but its not too bad either.  We think the main reason is that you can modify almost everything about the user interface and change or add a variety of settings on just about anything.  In all honestly Symbian just needs a decent re-organization for it to be more user friendly and appreciated.  The common operating lags between functions is still present and annoying because we are so used to the iPhones slick interface. Apart from that works at an acceptable speed. In regards to the hardware, although there is much debate on which touch screen technology is better we don't think there is much of a difference.  The secret is the software behind the screen that makes the most difference. The X6 also features a good 5mp camera, lots of standard memory 8Gig, 16Gig or 32Gig versions and A-GPS.  The screen image quality is just as good as the benchmark iPhone. In terms of construction the phone does not look as good as it does in the pictures.  It looks plastickly although feels good in the hands.  Old school design is the best description of the X6. In terms of functionality the X6 has it all for voice, almost any type of messaging, music, video and internet browsing. Speaking of which the browser was top of the class when released a couple years ago but it is showing its age even with FLASH compatibility.  Nokia needs to update the browser quickly. Overall the X6 is a pretty decent multi-media mobile phone.  I works well and has so much standard functionality that makes the iPhone seem like a basic mobile phone discounting the apps of course.  Sure there aren't too many additional apps available for the X6 just yet but that will probably come in time? So you will probably be happy with the X6 but there are better models out there - but few touch screen phones in the price range. Specifications

  • Nokia X3 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia X3 review/information  page. The X3-00 as it is also known is a GSM only mobile is focused on music.  It is only the second phone that we known of to date that has an inbuilt FM radio antenna.  Apart from that it has also quite a few features that are a surprise since it is only a 'lowly' GSM network model. Targetted as a 'feature' phone in slider design it look pretty good being made of good plastics.  However its keypad reveals it lower end position. The operating system is S40 based so it will run our free screensaver and wallpapers perectly - they will certainly improve the X3's look very nicely! The X3 also runs the latest version of the S40 operating system so all the usual Nokia programs are there.  It is also relatively fast so you shouldn't have any complaints.  Believe it or not lots of people in developing countries which the X3 is marketed for use their phone as radios and will absolutely love this phone.  Since it also comes with a decent mobile web browser you can get data as well but at very low speeds. Overall the X3 is like older 6500 except without 3G but with more features.  So if you mainly talk, text and just check your emails then this would be a pretty good model to get. Specifications

  • Nokia E5 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia E5 review/information page. To be released in 2010 this is the E5-00 as it will also be known is a seeming replacement for the E72!  The release of the E5 is strange since the E72 was only released in late 2009 we can't understand it but if Nokia wants to release an even better model than we won't complain.  We haven't got a real E5 to sample yet but since our E71 is due for replacement the E5 looks promising.  So here is what we think about the phone based on the released information. In terms of hardware all the usual Nokia E series stuff is there.  So A-GPS, Wi-Fi, camera and video recorder, FM radio, Bluetooth 2.o, nice screen, micro-USB and professional appearance. The new feature is DLAN compatibility which means you can control or link to devices on your wireless network.  It also runs an 600Mhz CPU which is the fastest one available for a Nokia. In terms of software all the usual E-series features but now has a more multi-media functions including a video editor and posting to the internet.  It can also play WMV files in additional to Youtube FLV standalone or within a web browser. Overall the E5 is a small upgrade compared the E72 but I can see why.  The E71 and E72 are really popular mobile phones and once you use one you too will be hooked. The C5 will probably continue the tradition and sales too! Specifications

  • Nokia C6-00 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia C6 review/information page. The Nokia C6-01 was released in late 2010 as a cheaper alternative to the N series smart phones.  It virtually has all the N97 functionality in a different case and slideout keypad.  We are concerned about the low CPU number after our short stint with the N97.  It really needs the 600Mhz processor available in other phones. Priced between the $400-500 price range it is expensive for a mobile phone with little design flair to show for it.  Thus we have no idea why they bothered releasing it - there are much better Nokia and other brands to choose from in the price range.  The Samsung Wave comes to mind! Anyway, the look and feel is almost all plastic but at least the construction is solid and light in the hands.  The slide out keypad is easy to use and should take some pounding.  The screen is relatively large thus no problems with viewing pictures or any other function. It is a cheap phone but with all the functionality you need in a phone for 2010. It has all the benefits and flaws inherent in most Nokia phones we have reviewed on this website so pointless repeating. Specifications

  • Nokia C3 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia C3 review/information page. The Nokia C3-00 is a basic QWERTY phone running the S40 OS interface.  Surprisingly the menu navigation system still works well and easy to use.  We like the good navigation speed and included functionality. Since this is a GSM network phone don't expect fast internet but do expect easy email, text messages or anything to do with keyboard input.  The Nokia C3-00 is priced at around $99 in a pre-paid package and honestly one of the best phones to get in this category. In terms of design, this is Nokia's new smooth look is up to date so no shame in using it is public!  It is made of slightly glossy but classy plastic with a contrasting rear battery panel made of metal.  Overall it looks good and feels pretty good for such a cheap price.  The keypad appears to use the model from the E63, E71 so it feels more expensive and more impressive than other those by other manufacturers. In terms of software the C3 runs on the S40 6th edition.  It does not have as many inherent features as the S60 based Nokia's BUT it can run our software as an animated wallpaper!  Obviously we recommend them for obvious reasons!  Other than that the C3 is designed for social networking website like Facebook, MSN, Yahoo and others. We also noticed that it can also play WMV files! In terms of hardware the phone does have one or two new features but that said - it is only a GSM phone! Among the best features: it uses the latest Transmissive LCD display screen which basically means it can be read more easily outdoors and it has Wi-Fi.  Although it is not a 3G capable phone it can still used GPRS for data.  Basically all this means is that you can chat and IM and Facebook all your want but can't or shouldn't  browse the web until you get access to a Wi-Fi access point because the GPRS/EDGE is really slow. Combined with a massive battery the C3 left on standby can last up to 33 days! All up the Nokia C3-00 is a very decent phone and based on the pricing at release (a mere $99) you can't really go wrong. Specifications

  • Nokia C5-00 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia C5 review. The C5-00 is essentially the mid-range model in the line up which will compete with all the other 'standard' 3G capable phones by other manufacturers. The Nokia C5-00 is priced at a competitive retail price of around $350 when it was released in mid-2010.  We think that is a worthy successor to the 6120 which has a similar feature set. It is a conservative and tidy design like popular Nokia phones of old yet with some nice design touches like metal and different colored plastics should make this a model to consolidate the multiple models with similar specifications in the range.  The multi colour works are it stands out from the increasing grey and black models from other manufacturers. We expect it to be a great pre-paid package too - eventually! In the hand we liked the feel and construction quality.  The large buttons work well and the whole case was nice and solid.  What we found odd though was that the screen appeared to be set back in the case rather than near the surface.  Apart from that it works fast and lag free.  We liked that the browser has the lastest OSS browser which means that even FLASH content on webpages work without any hiccups.  The inbuilt but view only versions of word, excel and powerpoint where also appreciated.  The inclusion of a fast CPU claimed to work at 600Mhz, A-GPS receiver and Ovi maps also extended the usefulness of the phone. We where impressed that everything worked fast and without unexpected lags - it is a very good do it all mobile phone.  That said we still prefer the S40 based Nokia 6700 because of its real metal construction. It is also interesting to note that a Telstra compatible NextG model is not being offered at the time of writing. Overall we did not have to spend too much time with the C5-00 because we have seen it all before and it is reassuring that things are improving in the 'standard' mobile phone area.  You will be happy with the C5 if you want a relatively cheap multi-purpose phone in a candy bar format. • Nokia E72 – Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to our review of the Nokia E72. The E72 is the successor to the very popular E71.  Strange that Nokia released a replacement just 12 months after the last release but we're not complaining!  We loved the previous model and one of use still uses it.  Simply put it does everything very well and the E72 although still too early to tell looks like it will be just as good as the older model. The E72 has been refined with updated hardware and software.  It faster, has more features and honestly a better package.  The E72 is marketed as a 'for business' mobile phone but it has all the other features that make it equally at home as a multi-media do it all personal phone as well.  It also runs the FLASH based free screensavers apps that we make! The first thing you'll notice is the new menu structure.  It's basically 2 layered with the Apps on the first main menu then followed by the normal S60 based or traditional menu system.  Its is much like the N97's update menu system  The default graphics have been updated with animated icons which adds eye candy. A widget capable home screen would have been nice instead of the usual messaging and calender etc... notifications. The new CPU makes the E72 noticable fast than the already fast E71 and smoother - works really well. As for the hardware the new body feels thinner than prior models and the keypad feels better.  Not sure about the smaller space bar but it overall the feel of the keys is very good albeit still a tad small.  The major change is the touch sensitive center navigation button.  The screen is still very good but not as nice as Blackberry's Bold series.  All the other featured attributes like weight and construction quality are up there with the best mobile phones on the market in 2010.  The battery life is also amazing for this sort of device it should last for over a week under normal usage. Overall a worth while update. There is so much technology and features packed into the phone it would take pages to details them all to the most basic level.  So we have reviewed the key features and did a simple rating. Messaging - Has all the latest communication options including SMS, MMS, video calling, VOIP, SKYPE, Multiple Email (manual and Push), MS Exchange synchronizing, onboard message recording, voice response and command, Wi-Fi, 3G, EDGE, Bluetooth etc.... Easy enough to set up to have the one device handle all your usual stuff. GPS navigation - the E72 has a excellent A-GPS navigation system.  The latest version has OVI Maps which replaces the old Nokia Maps and has the bonus of free maps and trip navigation (point to point voice guided) as well.  It is a proper car, walking, boating GPS navigator!  Accuracy so far is superior to the iPhone and seemingly as good as stand alone units.  (GPS comparison coming soon.)  Since it has the map data stored on a memory card no data plan is needed and you can browse the maps even without mobile coverage.  Excellent. Let me entertain you - Multi-media features- the E72 has all the latest entertainment functions you can wish for.  FM radio, internet radio, MP3, ACC, streaming TV, all common video formats including MP4 and FLV (aka Flash) AVI, etc..  Although not marketed as a multi-media phone this was a still a surprise.  The updated camera and video functions are also appreciated. The only thing missing is a touch screen but that's covered for by the touch navigation button.  The touch button does work well but a screen would probably work better. Since this is an E series phone there are still a ton of work applications that are pre-loaded. Word, Excel, Powerpoint editors, dictionary, Notes, ZIP, PDF, wireless printer connectivity, clocks, calendar, unit convertors, VPN and of course Internet. The web browser has been updated and together with the faster CPU allows one of the best mobile experiences on a moible phone we've seen.  Together with in-built FLASH allows you see full internet websites if you want rather than cut down versions. Conclusion: The E72 is a fantastic phone.  It does everything you can possibly imagine for 2010.  It looks good too which helps.  We can definitely recommend it to anyone!  If you're tossing up between the E71 or E72 I would go for the E72 since its not that much more expensive and a relative bargain compared to other manufacturers. If tossing up between the new N series phones have a long hard think because the E72 does 99% of what the N series in terms of entertainment but 110% of day to day functions in a simpler and more attractive fashion.  If purchased outright you'll find that it is relatively inexpensive.
