  • Telstra Dave 4G T83 Review

    BLANK
Welcome to the 2013 Telstra DAVE (T83) mobile phone review. Released in October 2013 this model is the first ruggedized touch screen smart phone offered by Telstra. Prior rugged phones have been designed based on the push button and candy bar style. Admittedly this old fashioned design does work better for those using the phone outdoors since it's easier to use with dirty or wet hands than a touch screen. However the outdoor types these days want more features which the traditional candy bar format just can't offer hence the new touch screen! The Telstra DAVE is available on a plan and can be purchased outright for around $390(recommended retail). Note that the biggest problem with the Dave is that it has limited phone network and 3G/4G frequencies meaning that it is really on useful on the Telstra network in Australia and not if you want to use it overseas. Note the ZTE have a similar if not exactly the same model called the ZTE G601U.  Also before you buy make sure you check its competitors. The Telstra Dave is not an Easytouch 4G or Frontier in a different body, since the DAVE has different CPU and slots. However whether these are the only changes is debateable unless you break open the case and compare. Furthermore it is based on Andriod OS and there's not much to differentiate the Telstra Dave from any other Telstra branded ZTE based smart phone. The name 'DAVE' is an interesting choice being based on a guys name in many parts of the world. It would be pity if you know a 'Dave' that you don't particularly like... In terms of construction and hardware the Telstra Dave has a reasonably fast CPU and graphics with all the usual sensors. The screen resolution is average likewise the camera and other 'entertainment' hardware. The resolution is Ok despite being 480x800 so it wasn't blurry or anything like the cheaper Android phones. Considering that the Dave is currently only available on a plan we expected and you should demand higher specifications. Regardless the body of  Telstar DAVE is the coolest part of the phone. Clearly it is made from toughened plastic with some metal screws on the back to highlight its toughness. We think the screws are only for show since the SIM card, power and expansion slots only have tabbed plastic covers. The Telstra Dave is easy enough to hold and feels solid with no creaks but the feel of the plastic is a little on the toy side of things especially with some sharper edges. It honestly looks like a phone with a rugged 3rd party case like the Otterbox... However overall not too bad but not as good as say the Casio G Z'one.  Check out the Nokia 625 for an example on how plastics should feel!. In terms of software the Telstra Dave is pretty good, being sold with the latest Android OS. The OS does not depart from standard Andriod OS very much with a few customised widgets and mostly smooth in operation. We didn't encounter and serious pauses. There's not much point going on about it since you can install the thousands of Apps for the Google Play store to fill in the missing functionality gaps. Overall the Telstra Dave 4G T83 is a decent mid range-ish smartphone wrapped up in a cool new case.  There are other 'rugged'  mobile phones with better specifications out there and the one that comes to mind is the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active which is noticeably better than the Dave but quite expensive. Since both phones can be bought on mobile phone plans for the same amount of monthly payments the obvious choice is not the Telstra Dave but the Samsung... Update: Check out the very similar Aspera R5 if you are after this style of smartphone. Specifications

  • Telstra Pulse T790 Review

    BLANK
Welcome to the 2013 Telstra Pulse (T790) mobile phone review. Released in May 2013 this model also took us by surprise since we thought it was the Frontier or Easytouch 4G model released  last year. ThePulse is hence very similar in design to the older and higher  models but differing significantly in hardware specifications this model is clearly the lessor model. The Pulse Android OS based smart phone and priced at a very reasonable $79 AUD as a pre-paid package from most larger retailers. It is a far cry from Telstra's first cheap smart phones which we thought where market leading in terms of price only and nothing else! The Pulse is actually quite useful. The Telstra Pulse is terms of construction is like its more expensive relations so it does feel a little cheap but certainly sturdy enough to carry around without a case. The Pulse does feel Ok considering its price and it should last a year or two without any problems. In terms of hardware specifications the Pulse is definitely on the basic Android end of the market. It has low resolution screen, camera, battery capacity, graphics and so forth. Mind you its not the only model with this sort of specification but one of the few knows brands selling or this price. Thanks to a 1Ghz CPU and separate graphics CPU all the expected communication like email, skype, txt, Facebook and so forth will work perfectly. However forget about Instagram or any app that relies to getting decent camera pictures. However the low resolution screen will annoy but at least it all works. In terms of software the Pulse runs the latest Android OS which should help broaden the range of software you can run on it. Apart from the custom Telstra widgets there is nothing unique about this particular model. There are some micro lags when using but its not that bad compared to past models. It still runs well and at this price there's not many models to choose from. We can't really say much more, so the conclusion to the Telstra Pulse review is that it is a decent low end Android phone for those who don't want anything special but a cheap phone that can do most things. Its got more going it than price for a change! Specifications

  • Telstra Tough 3 Review

    BLANK
Welcome to the 2013 Telstra Tough 3 (T55) mobile phone review. The Telstra Tough 3 was released in May 2013 is a replacement for the Tough 2. The Tough 2 was an Ok 'tough' phone  that was toy like up close. The latest Tough 3 addresses some of the prior versions issues since it is less toy like than the prior 2 and has a few other surprises. The Tough 3 is only available from Telstra on a plan which is a pity - Why? read on... Update: June 2014 - You can now purchase the Tough 3 outright for around $195 without a contract. The Telstra Tough 3 is a ruggerised phone build for the careless and those who don't need a 'smartphone'. The Tough 3 is one the the very few that is an old style keypad phone in 2013 so technically its one of the best you can buy! We beleieve that only Casio still makes these types of phones but only available in the US. In terms of construction it uses better designed materials feeling more solid and looking more serious. If you've ever seen a Cygnett iPad 'tough' cover version it has a similar color but not quite as tactile in feel. The screen quality is also very good! Of note is a A-GPS and a dedicated camera button and volume buttons down the side though the resulting picture quality isn't class leading. In terms of use the Tough 3 is very good. It is fast and responsive menus as well as activating the various other apps or functions. We have on complaints at all. Sure the menu system is the same grid style as use by Nokia and others over the last 10 years but its by far the quickest we've ever used. The only problem with the Tough3 is the data speed. For a new model it does not have the fastest connection relying on a 3.6 mbps maximum download so it takes awhile for things to happen (relatively). All the regular communications are there, email, txt, video calls and MMS so you are only missing the social network ones which you'll have to rely on the built in browser to get access to. All up the Telstra Tough 3 is one of the best ruggerised keypad based phones you can buy, but virtue of being one of the very few! Even that aside its a step up from the prior version due to its updated design and excellent operating speed. The Tough 3 is also 'regular' sized so using it is convenient and there is not need for an additional protective case. Even you decided to purchase the Tough 3 as a main phone there is not much to complain about since its limitations are clear and its selling point - being ruggerized is obvious. This one is for calls and text and message notifications regardless of weather conditions. Specifications

  • Telstra T96 Review

    BLANK
Welcome to the 2013 Telstra/ZTE T96 mobile phone review. In the basement end of the mobile market there are some great bargains! Less than 10 years ago phones like the T96 cost over $500 and quite desirable by everyone! However in 2013 only certain less developed markets and niche users are these types of phone in high demand. As a pre-paid phone the T96 is priced at $49 which is quite reasonable. In terms of construction the T96 is quite good. There are no uneven gaps in the case or keypad and the button feel good to press although a little limited in keypad travel. They have used matt colored panels which  are not slippery to touch which does give it a more expensive feel than a sub-$50 phone usually has - based on past models like the T95. The keypad isn't the best for those still with the old txting skills but it not too bad either. It comes in a variety of colors too which is a in change, The screen resolution and size is finally the industry standard or several years ago prior to the original iPhone. The screen and image quality is also very good for a cheap mobile phone. In terms of use the T96 works great. It responds to keypress will minimal delay for any of the various functions and it does seem smoother than prior models.  Mind you the internet download speeds despite 3G capabilities is still not as fast as it should be. The screen  graphics rate a mention as being very classy despite the multi-colour number display. I think they've been looking at Sony-Ericssons of late for inspiration. In fact it probably presents better than the latest Nokia Asha series thanks to better graphics - easily.  However the comparable Nokia Asha 300 for example has much more munctionality. Apart from the graphics there is nothing else worth pointing out. In the end the T96 is a basic phone but at least it doesn't look like one which is strangely the selling point. All we need now is the ability to use one as a wireless modem for our tablets and we can dump our 'smart phones'. The T96 is now one of the better cheap mobile phone you can buy. So if all you need is text and talking with email notifications then the T96 is good value. Specifications

  • Telstra Frontier Review

    BLANK
Welcome to the 2012 Telstra Frontier ( T81) mobile phone review. For Christmas 2012 Telstra and ZTE have released yet another 'bargain' priced reasonably high specified Android smartphone. The new Frontier T81 release took us by surprise, likewise the equally new EasyTouch 4G model. The Frontier model is a pre-paid phone package priced at $299. The Frontier and the EasyTouch 4G are both 4G or LTE phones have very similar design and specifications. The Frontier is a pre-paid package it has lessor spec hardware like lower camera resolution and screen size and so forth. The Frontier packs a 1.5 Ghz CPU and separate graphics processor are a standout in the pre-paid class but honestly when you use it - doesn't seem all that fast. In terms of construction the Frontier does not feel like high end phone but neither does the related EasyTouch 4G. Nonetheless it is solid and did not reveal any creaks or rattles. There is nothing that makes it stand out from the crowded pre-paid class on the outside at least. In terms of operation there is little to differentiate it from the a bare bones Android phone. Everything worked smoothly and fast but lacked some interface enhancements that Samsung and Motorola etc have come up with to show off the powerful CPU. That said Android has come a long way from a mere 2 years ago and likewise the offerings from Telstra/ZTE brand mobile phones. The ability to use the 4G part of the network is also a great hardware feature. Overall the Telstra Frontier has a fast CPU for games but hampered by the lower resolution and smaller screen. Since mobile websites are so minimal there is little make any difference from lower powered smartphones.  The only thing that made as cringe was the high price! it's not a cheap phone. The Telstra marketing area probably thought it would appeal to hand held gamers and it might but unlikely for the obvious reason - it that doesn't look high end and that Angry Birds doesn't need a 1.5Ghz CPU to run smoothly and everyone we talked to wanted a phone with a 5 inch screen for gaming! So if you like a plain looking and fast Android phone but locked to Telstra then go for it. Otherwise the value for money the Google Nexus 4 or even the Nexus 3 is more than a match. Specifications

  • Telstra Easytouch 4G Review

    BLANK
Welcome to the 2012 Telstra Easytouch 4G ( T82) mobile phone review. For Christmas 2012 Telstra and ZTE have released 'bargain' priced reasonably high specified Android smartphone. The new Easytouch 4G release took us by surprise, likewise the smaller Telstra Frontier model. The Easytouch 4G is currently only available on a monthly plan at around $35. The Telstra Easytouch 4G at first use is a great experience. In terms of construction the overall build quality is very good. The only thing we can comment on was that the metal surround looked a little 'cheap' and a little on the toy side in terms of feel but better than the original iPhone though! and clearly much better than the models we've seen from Telstra in the past 12 months. In terms of hardware specification, the Easytouch 4G's CPU is fast likewise the graphics system. The screen is the 4.3 which is a reasonable size and above the average. There is nothing deficient or particularly low end abut the phone which is nice change. The technology is about the level of the Samsung Galaxy SII. In terms of operation the  user interface is often where the Telstra phones fall down. However we can thankfully say that Easytouch 4G interface works really well and that's due purely to the fast CPU. There are a few customisations we noticed apart from the large menu widgets on its Android (Jelly bean) version of the software. In fact there are only a few image transition effects which were missing. Presumably this is why Apple is suing every other phone company for. It is a bit rich coming from a company that out right copied the clock design of the Swiss clock. What else have Apple copied that they haven't owned up to yet? Regardless we really don't care about legal battles and you won't miss the power hungry effects. There are plenty of Apps in the Google Play store these days and there is always something new to try. Admittedly some apps though are quite old and primitive to look at . Of note is that the Angry Birds games are free. Overall the Telstra Easytouch 4G is definitely the best model released by the company under its own branding for the Christmas 2012 period but we understand there are better ones planned for 2013. The Easytouch will do everything you want with the speed and stability you expect on another brand name smartphone. It appears to be almost as polished as any other phone running Andriod 4.0 - but at a cheaper price on a monthly plan. It is the best one we've tested from Telstra to date. Forget the other cheaper Telstra Urbane, Uno etc.. Just remember to compare the Nokia 800 and 900 which run Windows Phone 7.5 you may change your mind since they are now priced the same even on plans. Specifications

  • Telstra Roamer Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the 2012 Telstra Roamer (T116a) review. The Roamer is the latest revision to the candy bar style mobile phone for the masses. It has the essential functions you need for basic  communications and not much more. It's only capable of voice - TXT - MMS - (very limited) email. The Roamer is available as a pre-paid package for under $30! The Telstra Roamer is a great phone for basic use - no more no less. We looked at it for less than a minute and can say it works fine. There are no features which the T116a can boast to be a convincing purchase. However it is relatively over priced because  Nokia,Samsung and other Telstra models have got brilliant phones with more stuff for the same price many with dual SIM and international coverage thanks to additional frequencies for a few dollars more! Eg. Sony-Ericsson Cedar (easily the better phone) can now be purchased for $39 or even $29 dependent on how the physical stores are desperate to clear them. Our conclusion is: avoid the Telstra Roamer T116a unless truly desperate or you want a freebie for a Telstra SIM. Specifications

  • Telstra Uno Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the 2012 Telstra Uno (T12) review page. The Uno is a pre-paid package priced at around $90-100, making it one of the cheapest Android based mobile phone handsets and presumably a replacement for the older Smart Touch series released last year. When these types of low end or base model smart phones where released last year they were a revelation in being very low price and reasonable specification. However 12 months on they are showing many flaws which have made them largely unwanted. The Telstra/ZTE in particular have not invested enough time in optimising the hardware and Android software  resulting in noticeably lower user experience with lags and sluggishness Eg. Telstra Urbane despite the 1Ghz CPU. The Uno is not exempt using a dated Android 2.3 software when the world is up to version 4. In the few minutes we spent with the Uno we where underwhelmed with its construction and operation, preferring the HTC Wildfire S for a mere $20-30 more as a pre-paid package. The HTC Wildfire S easily exceeds the Telstra's Uno construction and user experience. In fact the Wildfire S is a better experience than even the current top range Telstra Urbane. Back to the UNO - expect the Uno's price to around the $50 mark in a few months and see if you are still interested.. Specifications

  • Telstra Urbane T22 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the 2012 Telstra Urbane T22 mobile phone review. Finally we have Android smart phone from Telstra/ZTE that can compete with the other manufacturers on features and user experience and not purely on a cheap price.  Regular and non-smart phones from Telstra are usually basic but pretty good however all their Android smart phones so far have major performance flaws or interface issues that we could only recommend based on price. In some cases not recommend at all. The pre-paid Urbane T22 package is priced at cheap and tempting $149. The Telstra Urbane uses a 1GHZ CPU, decent sized screen but relatively low resolution that is OK to look at but the latest Android 4.0 software with minimal enhancements – which is good. The plastic case is definitely not high end but feels mid range and well made. However at this sort of price tag there are shortfalls in the other areas that include the basic screen resolution and quality, basic 3Mp camera and VGA video recording. In terms of operation the Urbane T22 is pretty smooth (there are noticeable lags) and not fast as you would expect. The 1Ghz CPU does wonders for the user experience compared to prior models. However it is still not as smooth as say the HTC Wildfire which has a slower CPU. However with the decent web browser, A-GPS and even an FM radio there's very little that majority will miss. Personally they should have included a better camera for the Facebook generation and possibly drop the FM radio. The standard web browser allows you to visit any site even with Flash based content - however it will not run complex games like those on Facebook. The Telstra Urbane is a pretty good smart phone and the best Telstra branded models we've tested to date. At a very cheap pre-paid price of $149 you can definitely consider it as replacement for your old keypad phone. The T22's hardware does not appear to be optimized for the latest Android due to the lags we encountered on it but not other Android phones. Sure Android has its issues but no more than the iPhone but at least it can do everything that a iPhone or Nokia's as examples can do. Forget all the other pre-paid mobile phones from Telstra the Urbane T22 is to date, one of the cheapest hence best value most fully featured mobile phone you can buy! Specifications
