  • Telstra F158 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Telstra/ZTE F158 review. The F158 is technically identical to the F152 and the F156. The differences are all to do with the casing. This is clearly a rugged version. How rugged? well moderately more we suspect. We think it feels much better then its family members because of the rubber surround. The F158 is much like the Nokia 5500 series except that the Nokia has a ton more features like calorie, distance counters and even appropriate PC software to see your activity on a graph. It also comes with a 1700mAh battery! So it should easily last 10 or so days if not more left on standby. The F158 is good basic phone but only if you want to be connected to the Telstra network.  For people into outdoors or farming and those who live in the 'bush' this could be the phone for you. Otherwise there are better models. Specifications

  • Telstra F153 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Telstra/ZTE F153 review. The F153 is essentially a F152 or 156 without various hardware features. This is truly a base model phone. It's only available in Black.   It's missing a Camera or Video, Bluetooth, No external memory and No voice recorder.   Apart from that it works exactly like the other models. It is a basic mobile that only redeems its self on purchase price and that it's locked to the Telstra network.  Since the network for 3G or NextG content is expensive its only recommended if you want a phone that can access Australian Idol content.  Otherwise there are cheaper and better alternatives. • Telstra F152 and F156 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Telstra/ZTE F152 and F156 mobile phone review. We put the reviews of these 2 models together because there are identical. The model numbers differ according to color of the casing. These are entry level models so don't expect too much - but you'll be surprised at what they offer. Battery Life The battery life of the phone is very good. On standby essentially 7 days. With normal usage 3-4 days. Since it operates on the NextG (850Mhz 3G) network its a bordering on excellent. Speed Overall the phone is very fast. Menu navigation and running applications are flawless. Just as fast as the benchmark. Loading web pages and streaming videos work really well on the F152. The quality of the streaming video quality and the sound is just as good as more expensive phones. However the volume of the loud speaker is on the soft side. Camera/Video Picture quality is OK for a mobile phone (ie no where near a dedicated camera). The fact that it has 2 cameras for video calling is great. Note that I know very people who actually use video calling. Media Player The MP3 player is very basic - missing multiple playlists, EQ, ID3 tag diplay, and easy navigation. At least it sounds reasonable. Screen The screen used on this phone reflects its pricing position. It's the industry standard 176 x 220 pixels with 262K colours. Specs indicate a clear screen taking into account the low pixel count but in reality it's nothing special. Its probably because of its slightly larger is size. The screen's back light is very good with adjustable levels. Construction This is only flaw with the F152 and F156. Don't believe the pictures it doesn't look as good in real life. Yes the phone is sturdy but it very late 90's in terms of overall feel. The buttons are the main problem, they feel awful and cheap. We didn't want to show anyone our latest handset. So don't buy it for design flair. Of note is the sliding USB/power socket on the left and covered trans-flash memory card slot on the bottom. The side USB means that it looks and is fussier to fit in the car kit. Functionality It is a 3G phone so you'd expect a reasonable offering. Indeed it doesn't let you down. It has everything you'd expect in a mobile phone made in 2007. Navigation to send an sms is a mere and logical 3 presses from the stand by screen. We do miss the old single press SMS from the old days but with so many different types of messages you can send these days it is not unexpected. It lacks a lot of customisation features that aren't really essential but it would have been nice to have them. At least it has pre-set phone groups and custom ring tones. It runs JAVA applications but unfortunately no games are pre-installed. Call quality Overall very good. Callers and us where heard without any break up or static. That said calls sounded a tad hollow. Network It has almost all frequencies you need 3G HSDPA and UMTS in 850Mhz or 2100Mhz, GSM 900, 1800 and 1900. Not many phones have dual 3G frequencies which is thus a stand out. Network reception seems in our 'marginal' area is good but should be better. In fact the GSM signal was always better then the 3G signal for Telstra. Whether its the actual network coverage or phone receiver we aren't quite sure. Conclusion All up the Telstra F152 or F156 is a good mobile phone. A few things missing when compared to its competition notably FM/AM radio and Flight mode. It's also missing a lot of customization features we've become accustomed to. Nevertheless a decent entry level mobile built for the Telstra NextG network. It's only real 3G competitor (in 2007) is the LG 8360 on the 3 network (at the $149 price) check out the review on this site. When comparing them, the LG has superior screen quality and functionality but it is noticeably slower in operation. When comparing the against the Nokia 6234 from Vodaphone at $199 we would choose the 6234 any day. So base your decision on which network provider offers the best deal rather than comparing the phone specifications. Specifications

  • Nokia 6230i Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia 6230i mobile phone review. The 6230i and its predecessor the 6230 is classed as a business mobile phone. As such Nokia has tried to fit in everything that a business user could possibly want. As a result it appealed to almost everyone and hence sold in the millions! Initial pricing was top of the line and over the years it has fallen to mid-range and in 2007 it is seen as a value priced mobile. We think this is a great do it all phone Battery Life The battery life of this phone is excellent 9 days on stand by and at least 3 days with normal usage (1 hour worth of calls and numerous SMS messages). Recharging with the included charger takes less than 2 hours. Speed The 6230i is very fast. That said its not as fast as the 6230 version but by mere micro seconds. Menu navigation activation of any function cannot be criticised. Construction. The 6230i is constructed in the traditional fashion with Nokia's famous X-press On covers. So you can choose hundreds of different colors or designs. However beware that non-genuine covers have variable build quality, genuine Nokia covers cost a lot but have superior build quality. Also note that the 6230i although looks identical to the 6230 there are differences and getting covers for one will not fit the other. Physical differences between the 2 are the the 6230i has a slightly larger screen, mini-USB on the side and a separate center button on the navigation pad. The higher pixel count compared to the 6230 is not noticed as unless you compare it side by side. Overall the build quality is great and the covers click into place better than the original version. Screen resolution, keypad, all work really well. Light and right are the best description. There a a ton of colors available over the years. That said in 2007 the overall design is looking dated but it functionality is state of the art and as fully featured as phones released this year. Functionality The 6230i reviewed had everything you could wish for in 2007. The list could go on for pages. Basically everything can be customised to suit your taste and style. It is also nice to see updated 3d icons for menus and so forth compared to the 6230. If you live by your mobile then this is the one to get. Connectivity It has Bluetooth, Infrared and USB options so your not missing out on PC related file transfers. However you need to install the software on the PC before being able to do most things. MP3, radio and video/sound It has a built in mono speaker that's loud and clear located on the left side. It sounds better than a lot of other phones. It even has a sound equaliser. However the MP3 player application is not as fully featured as dedicated music phones. Video playback is smooth and quick. The FM radio is as good as it gets, with programmable stations and visual radio options. You can even set it as your alarm 'ringtone' or even use it as a normal radio in loudspeaker mode. However like all mobiles you need to connect the headphones to get radio reception. Web Browser They included the standard Nokia web browser and works well considering the small screen by today standards. It has all the usual functions you can expect in a internet browser. The camera/video recorder The camera and camcorder function are quick to start and takes OK pictures for a mobile phone. Nothing exceptional about the quality here. Being a business phone that is all you should expect. The screens The screen looks good although small by today's standards. the colour and brightness is excellent. Call quality and network reception The voice call quality of the 6230i is top rated and it has the ability to keep network reception going even in marginal mobile coverage areas. Issues It doesn't have any issues worth mentioning. Nokia phone software for Windows This Nokia suite that comes with the phone is very good. It has everything you need includes contact and content manager. Missing from earlier software was the carrier logo editor. Network Supported by all GSM networks and carriers. Summary All things considered this is an excellent mobile phone. It has all the features you could possibly want and more. It is an improvement over the 6230. You can not compare it to other mobiles that are dedicated for a specific function eg. Blackberry for email, or walkman phones for music. This is clearly designed as a do it all phone - which it does well. Anyway, the physical design is getting old but if you can live with that then it is a must buy. Our recommendation? It's a must buy if you haven't already tried. Specifications and price

Welcome to the Nokia 6230 mobile phone review. This model was chosen by us because in prior jobs we all had one at some point. We all agreed that it should be the benchmark for reviews since its very popular phone. Originally released back in 2003 it was released as a top spec phone representing what we consider the ultimate evolution of the 40 series phones but as with all mobiles it has moved downwards in the model order. Battery Life The battery life of this phone is excellent. One Standby it lasted 9 days with a bit left. On busy days with bluetooth, infrared, SMS and with a few calls it managed to go a full day with power to spare. Charging time based on the include charger was a mere 1 hour 45 minutes. Mind you the charger is higher capacity than that of lower models. So using the charger for other compatible phones will achieve the same results. Speed The phone is very fast. Construction. The 6230 is a well constructed phone with one issue. The changeable covers are a tad loose. Although well secured to the body of the phone which is nice and tight the cover mechanism allows a but of leeway causing the occasional creaking noise. Other than that the plastics of the original cases are well made and detailed and scratch resistant. The keypad is small but well weighted. Its memory card is hidden under the battery. Remember that the 6230 was one of the first mainstream phones with a memory card! Functionality The 6230 has all you need in a good mobile phone in 2007. We could go on and on about the various features and customising options. Connectivity This phone has all the options, bluetooth, USB and infrared. Like most phones the PC software needs to be installed before you can do even the most basic file management tasks. About Infrared: We love it because it enables secure, stable and simple file transfers between any device without installing specific software. It only uses a small amount of power. MP3 and video/sound The inbuilt speakers sound better than many mobiles and it is nice and loud. However it music abilities are limited to the manual selection of files you want to play. This applies to videos as well. The FM radio works well and it can even be used as the alarm tone. Web Browser The included browser is a LG version and works well. Since the phone tech is pretty good downloading pages and content is fast. Superior to the U8360. Yes, you can go to your own URLs. The camera/video recorder The applications tarts up quickly and takes OK pictures and movies for phones of this vintage. The screens The Nokia's display was one of the best in 2005 and still holds true although small by 2007 standards. Nice clear graphics images are used but again showing its age. The image is better than say the W300i. Call quality and network reception Voice only call quality is very good. Quality and equalisation tends to the high side. Network reception is also very able to make calls even in marginal coverage areas. Ie. one bar reception. Issues The only worth mentioning is the changeable covers issue and old style design. Nokia Phone software for Windows The PC suite that comes with the phone is almost complete, You can mange every piece of data you have in the phone and memory card. It is split into various applications so that you can use one without needing to launch every application. Network You can get the phone for every network as an out-right purchase. Summary We still have one in use after 3 years and on the original battery. Our recommendation? Perfect do it all phone if you can live with its looks. Best features Price for features. Great screen Bluetooth. Could do better features Only single alarm. Not enough internal memory. Worst features No USB cable included in package. Detailed features Sync data with PC Alarm Clock, Calendar, Notes, Stopwatch, Task list, Timer Themes, Customisable backgrounds, Screensaver Music, Picture, Video player Voice dialling - answer - recorder T9 SMS dictionary 150 SMS 20 dialled numbers 20 received calls 20 missed calls Calendar To Do Memo Wallet feature 150 SMS in phone 1000 Contacts in phone with pictures JAVA Games (Runs Java games up to 125K)

  • Nokia 3120 Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Nokia 3120 mobile phone review. The 3120 has been around for a few years now and still available because its good basic mobile phone. I mean basic literally - not entry level. If you only need a mobile for emergencies or just staying in contact every so often then this is a perfectly suitable model to get. Battery Life The battery life of this phone is excellent. Left on stand the battery will last up to 10 days with calls it'll go for at least 5 hours continuously. We know because we used it on a particularly busy day! Speed The phone is quite fast. Menu scrolling and activation is on par with other basic mobiles. Construction. The 3120 is well constructed with sturdy materials. Nice looking and integrated well despite 5 different coloured material used. Most of all it doesn't have any creaking plastics. Even in 2007 the phone looks modern on the outside. Physically it's probably 1cm too small to be comfortable holding for average sized adults. For teens and younger it would probably be perfect sized. The keypad is plastic and when you press the keys you encounter very strong spring feedback. Hence it is unlikely that you will need to lock the keypad if placed in a pocket by its self. Functionality The Nokia 3120 in 2007 is not a feature rich phone. However there are a few things that will surprise you. The customisation features for example extend to screen savers with timing options! All the call management basics are there: contacts, speed dialling, last number dialled, call waiting, hold divert and timer and even hands free. Text messaging including MMS is all there with a few useful bonuses like message counter, message sorting into folders! Other functions include calendar, calculator, alarm clock, stopwatch and countdown, key pad shortcuts, and even timed profiles and call groups. Connectivity It can only connect via a POP-PORT USB cable - not included in the package. Besides with only .5 of a megabyte (512k) to use I don't think you'd need one. MP3 and video/sound It doesn't play MP3s only MIDI. The inbuilt speaker is nice and loud though. Web Browser It has a basic browser and access the internet via GPRS. So its not very quick but works. The camera/video recorder It doesn't have one! The screens It only has a 128x128 screen but unlike other basic phones its colour. The image quality is washed out - as per any other CSTN screen. At least not mono like others in this category. The package came with a wired hands free! However this does not make it entry-level, its still a basic mobile phone. If Nokia updated it with a OLED screen MP3 player, radio and memory card I can predict more sales. Call quality and network reception The call quality is excellent and it is able to hold on even to a marginal signals. Call clarity is typical Nokia meaning good. Issues We didn't encounter anything worth mentioning. Nokia Phone software for Windows No PC software came with this phone. Network You can only buy this phone outright. Summary It is a very good basic mobile phone. If your after something reliable then this is perfectly acceptable. Among the best out there. *When considering its successors the 2626, 2610 or 2650 these look cheap compared to the 3120 but have more features. If you in this price range consider getting a pre-paid package by the same network you're on with a better phone. You don't have to sign-up for a new number if you choose. Best features Lots of little things - see above. Could do better features Front screen could be higher resolution. Worst features Very little on board memory. Specifications

  • Motorola V9 (RAZR2) Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Motorola V9 mobile phone review. The V9 was released in late 2007 as the successor to the V3xx which in turn was the replacement for the V3 and V3i.  The V series phones from Motorola have always looked good and the V9 and its twin the V8 are no different.  They are great looking phones anyone would be happy to own. There have been many version of the same phone over the years the last one being the V9x which included on-board A-GPS for navigation. The V9 is the 3G version of the latest V series phones.  It features large dual 240 x 320 screens with external touch controls  and the slimmest and arguably best looking flip phone or clam shell design on the market.  It is packed with technology including 500Mhz CPU. Quality of construction was as good with excellent attention to detail and materials. The V9 however does have issues.  It uses Motorola's ancient OS that has been enhanced over the years to cater for more functionality.  Even worse due to the horrible way the mobile network companies 'customise' the phone for their network ruins the experience for the user.  For example some models do not have a flight mode or others can't change the soft key functions or even worse limit functionality on the external touch buttons.  So if you have problems blame the network not Motorola. Despite all that if you get an network free version you will be impressed by the high quality screens, phone speed and usability.  However you will be disappointed at the un-logical menu structure.  The standard browser is annoying so get a model with Opera installed or download it your self.   Some mobile networks also place a limitation on 'push email' functionality which again hurts the reputation of the V9.  The v9 does not have a FM radio either. Regardless of network the thing that probably hurts the v9 the most is the difficult way to install software unless from the network provider.  Also the limitations of installing simple things such as new themes is disappointing.  If you want customization then you need to visit the Motorola hacking sites for the instructions.  If you happy with the basic functionality then you will be happy that is what this phone is good at. Overall this is a great looking phone with some issues.  Mind you when we reviewed the V9 we didn't encounter software related bugs that everyone seems to be reporting but we got one that didn't have a flight mode.  Great phone for talk, text and internet if you get a network free one.

  • Motorola V8 (RAZR2) Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Motorola V8 mobile phone review. The V8 was released in late 2007 as the successor to the V3 and V3i. The V series phones from Motorola have always looked good and the V8 and its twin the V9 are no different. They are great looking phones anyone would be happy to own.  The gold and snake skin V8 are particularly impressive. The V8 is the GSM only version of the latest V series phones. It features large dual 240 x 320 screens with external touch controls and the slimmest and arguably best looking flip phone or clam shell design on the market. It is packed with technology including 500Mhz CPU. Quality of construction was as good with excellent attention to detail and materials. The V8 has less issues than the V9because it uses an entirely different operating system.  The system is prettier to look at and much more logical than the V9 OS.  However again many report the certain versions of the phone - those 'customized' and locked to certain networks have the most problems.  Due to the horrible way the mobile network companies 'customize' the phone for their network ruins the experience for the user. Like the V9 if you get an network free version you will be impressed by the high quality screens, phone speed and usability.  It's GSM only so in certain parts of the world you can get data but at very slow speeds.  The V8 does not have a FM radio either. Regardless of network the thing that probably hurts the v8 the most is the difficult way to install software unless from the network provider. Also the limitations of installing simple things such as new themes is disappointing. If you want customization then you need to visit the Motorola hacking sites for the instructions. • Sony Ericsson w300i Review

Welcome to the Sony Ericsson W300i mobile phone review. We liked the look of this phone so decided to do a review. The W300i is classed as an entry level music phone. The W in front of the number indicates that this is a music phone. So you can expect the phone to work primarily as a music player as opposed to designed primarily for calls or SMS. In fact its got the Sony Walkman logo on the front cover! It's a light all plastic phone with features you wouldn't expect in this price category. Aside from the bonus stuff standard functionality it really is quite complete although low-spec. Available in a variety of colours, we choice a pearl white one because we feel it's the nicest colour. We reckon its a great music phone for the price. But what about its phone functions? Battery Life The battery life of this phone is very good easily lasting 3 days with an estimated 8 hours of music and radio via headphones and speaker every so often, bluetooth file transfers and a few calls. Left on stand by you can expect at least 7-10 days but probably longer. So music fans can listen to music or radio all day and more without needing to recharge. The phone can be charged via USB cable - which was an unexpected bous. Speed The phone is fast - scrolling through menus you not only get fast options but also fancy animated graphics that make you wonder why you need a super computer to make Windows Vista look any good and certainly makes the iPod interface very look old. Construction. The W300i is an all plastic phone that manages to look modern and more expensive than you would expect - on the outside. However when you hold the phone that image of expense disappears. Holding the phone reveals some creaking panels and opening the flip reveals cheaper but sturdy looking plastics. The keypad has been designed for style rather than usability. Unlike higher range phones the keys move around in their slots. The numeric keys are circular round with a translucent clear/reflective silver with orange back lighting. The function keys are the standard Sony Ericsson configuration but are in Walkman style rather than the normal Z or K series. So it doesn't have the usual green and red phone buttons. The menu key is recessed so you'll often activate other features before pressing the correct key. The keys are on the small side for normal adults but teenagers would probably find it acceptable. The clam design seems sturdy to look at but the display section on the flip reveals a bit of leeway and that it is either all open or all closed. Colours available are black or white with silver highlights. The white one looks better than the black we feel. There is a bright orange multi-function button on the left and the infrared port is on the right, the earphone, multi-purpose including earphone connector is at the bottom. Currently available colors include shadow black, shimmering white. The memory card slot is hidden under the battery cover. Overall it looks great but when finally getting your hands on it - it doesn't feel as good at it looks. Functionality The W300i although the bias is to music functionality has all the essential features that you'd expect in a mobile phone in 2007. It has a usable web browser, calendar, camera, video, games, photo contacts, messaging and so forth. However none of the options are comprehensive compared to it music features. That said, it also has quite a few unexpected but desirable features! For example if you're a parent you can limit type and who the phone can call. It can also divert calls from people you don't want to talk to directly to your voice mail. It has a phone software update service - so you don't need to go to a shop to update. A voice dialling or voice answer, a voice recorder and so forth. As for customisation you can change themes and background independently, use profiles, groups and navigation key short-cuts - all the usual stuff you would expect. The only complaint if that - is that there is no way to turn off the animations. We discovered a bonus flashing light on the right when its low on batteries! When using the USB cable the memory phone can be used a an external storage drive - bonus. Most of the functions are menu driven so lots of clicking and selecting required we did not bother trying to find out how many messages or appointments etc... although lots of 'hidden' options because it would have taken too long - besides its a music phone! Connectivity It has the complete set of options bluetooth, USB and infrared. Unfortunately the Sony Ericsson software needs to be installed on your PC before you can access all its features, including the drivers for USB. On the phone itself there is the Remote Control Application which allows you to control other bluetooth devices like projectors, media players and PC. Although we didn't try this function it clearly an unexpected bonus. MP3 and video/sound The W300i performs very well as a music player and as a radio. The Walkman features all the expected options on a modern player with playlists, sorting by album, artist, song name, file name, various repeats and so forth. Video options are limited though. It has various eq. settings like trade marked Mega Bass but the equaliser only works in ear phone mode. In loud speaker mode the sound quality is very average and almost flat. The FM radio rates a mention as it has RDS capability. RDS - Radio Data System is used by various stations that either show the name of the station or perhaps the name of the song that is being played. Some radio stations use it to promote various shows. So when you use the W300i you get to see the name of the station or whatever else they decide to include. But that's not all it also has AF (Alternate Frequency) which allows the radio to retune its self to any other frequency that the same station is being broadcasted on. Useful if you live in a marginal area and don't want the same station. The earphones that come the W300i are the same Sony Walkman series so they are very good quality. In fact these are the benchmark earphones we use in reviews! They sound great especially combined with the Mega Bass setting. There are the extras: VideoDJ to edit you videos on the phone. PhotoDJ to edit your pictures on the phone MusciDJ allows you to make your own music or tones. All these extras are easy to use. All up it's excellent considering the price. It's not perfect though and a few criticisms like the radio functionality should be included as part of the Walkman feature. The colours of the feature should be changeable with a visualiser of some sort on either external of internal screens. Lastly there needs to be a function on that allows you to change playlists and forth on the external screen when the phone is closed. Web Browser The included browser is a Sony Ericsson version and works OK. You can browse the internet using GPRS but it is slow compared to 3G offerings. The camera/video recorder What the phone excels in is music and accordingly the camera and video application is very poor. It offers a few high end features like timer and light settings but that's it. Its not disappointing because it clearly not designed as a camera phone. However in 2007 we expect a full 1.3MP as the minimum. In camera mode the highest resolution is 640x480. Video resolution on only covers a max of 176x144 pixels. Quality is output is expected poor. The specs say 4x zoom, but in reality it is only available on the smallest image setting. All of this was expected. So don't get this phone for its imaging performance. The screens The screens on the W300i look good in specifications but in reality very average. The external screen is a 2 colours - bright orange and dark orange. It is easy to read and large enough for most eyes. The internal screen although capable of many colours is not very high resolution. it compares to the Gameboy SP screen in look. We thought it was slightly disappointing but not something that counts heavily against it since it is a music phone. Call quality and network reception Voice call quality is very good with proper volume and clear. The sound though is a tad flat. It seems to be able to maintain a signal even in marginal areas better than say the Samsung mobiles. Issues Everything on the phone works and we did not experience and system crashes or freezes. As we said before the function to change playlists should be available on the external screen as well - being a music phone. The W300i does not have a flight mode that you would expect, that is as a profile. What you have to do is turn off the phone and turn it back on selecting the Walkman only option. (Larger sites clearly don't test their phones properly.) Certainly an odd way of doings things compared to other manufacturers. Sony Ericsson software for Windows The software that comes with the phone looks good. It includes the PC Suite, Quicktime, Adobe Photoshop Album SE and the Disc2Phone. The included USB cable is really handy. The installation of the software requires the latest .NET 1,1 stuff so rebooting your PC up to 3 times may be necessary. One odd thing we noticed is when trying to move a file from the root directory to another folder - we couldn't do it. It had be be done when the phone was in drive mode. We are used to being able to move files about without changing settings. All up its a easy package to use if you just go with the flow. Trying to think about how to do things only makes it more complicated. Just press the buttons. Network You can buy the phone outright but it is currently tied to Optus and a pre-paid phone. Summary The Sony Ericsson W300i is a great music phone. Even its physical twin the Z510i is not as good. It looks cool and made reasonably well. It offers some great features unexpected in this price bracket but they are balanced out by the lack of other stuff eg. lower resolution screen. The sales package included a all you need including a USB cable and 256MG M2 memory card and the Walkman headphones/wired hands free cables. The W300i compared to an iPod Nano we feel the winner is still the the phone. Sound quality is just as good and it has more features than an iPod. So if you've been trying to decide whether to buy an iPod or a new mobile this is a good solution. Unless you plan on using iTunes... Our recommendation? Great package and reasonably price - just remember it is primarily a music and entertainment phone. If you buy on that basis you'll love it.
