  • Game Review – Johnny Crash

    NAME: Johnny Crash
    COMPANY: Sumea
    PLATFORM: JAVA
    GENRE: Action
    SIZE: 133 KB
    TEST PHONE: LG U8630
    RATING: 9/10

Johnny Crash by Sumea – The premise of this game is you controlling a stunt man which has to perform various mid-air tricks.
You as Johnny gets shot out of a cannon and see how far you can fly before crash landing. You have to help him gain fame by also meeting various tasks.

What makes me recommend this game is that its one of a few that only requires the use of 1 button. Yep its a one button game ! Fantastic I’m sure many people are saying.

There’s 2 modes. The career mode and the high score mode. Career mode see you and Johnny attempt to gain fame by doing mid air tricks to impress an audience. High score sees you attempt to ‘fly’ the longest distance.

Game play: Johnny gets shot out a cannon that moves up and down.
There are different optimal angles which you have to shoot from. The cannon moves automatically so timing is essential. Whilst mid air you pres the button to make him flap his arms to adjust forward angle, up or down.
There is only a limited ‘strength’ so you can’t flap his arms all the time.

There are various tasks which involve getting hit by lightening to speed up and kites to help him fly higher.
There are also alien space ships to hit and helicopters and flocks of birds to run into. Fun and ridiculous at the same time.

There other hilarious part is the landing.
Some tasks involve crash landing into signs or shopping trolleys. Landing on the ground is just a funny too ! BTW you get points for how ‘spectacular your landing is.

It is not a difficult game to master, learning the best time to flap and timing the landing. Learning the controls is really easy with only one button to press. Perfect for a mobile phone.

    There’s 12 levels titled:
    Flying school
    Electricity
    Birds
    Barrels
    Kite gulide
    Cloud encounter
    Heli-hair-cut
    Coffee and Donut
    High profile Conference
    Lost in Supermarket
    Goldrush

Graphics are good with little action movements that are appropriate. IT may seem minimal at first but lets face it the sky isn’t filled with crap in real life.

Sound is standard midi is appropriate but not varied.

The save function doesn’t seem to work on the 8630 which is why we haven’t given it a perfect score.

That said this is a Sumea product so its difficult to tell if there is a save function at all.

I believe a new version is out – Johnny Crash Does Texas.

    Summary

Johnny Crash is an entertaining game. It is simple yet difficult to master. You can pick it and play over and over. In fact I’m now refining my flying technique to beat the high scores.

I reckon its fairly close to the perfect mobile phone game. A must have game.

    PLATFORM: JAVA
    GENRE: Movie/TV based Platformer
    SIZE: 218 KB
    TEST PHONE: LG U8630
    RATING: 3/10

The premise: You play as various members of the F4 team sent to complete various tasks in order to catch up with Dr Doom.

The gamplay involve solving various puzzles and ‘clobbering’ various enemies using the various powers of each member of the F4. This is all very standard stuff in these types of games – nothing new here.

Graphics are poor and sound is minimal throughout the game. I felt like I stepped back in time to the old days of the Commodore 64 or Sinclair computers.

Besides the graphics the other problem is the controls and collision detection issues. It’s all imprecise and just plain odd. It was annoying to the point that we didn’t finish the game.

    Summary

We rate this game a 3/10.

We gave this game a low score because there is nothing really desirable about it. Some older fans may enjoy the old style look and feel but the majority won’t. If you persist you may be able to complete the game but it could have been so much better.

  • Game Review – Dragon Island

    NAME: Dragon Island

    PLATFORM: JAVA
    GENRE: Forward scrolling shooter

    RATING: 7/10
You play as the hero Theobald Blade sent out by King Chaung the Wise of the Green Islands to sort out the awakening of Dragon Island. Unfortunately nothing is said or hinted about what why the ‘Awakening of Dragon Island’ is such a bad thing ! I guess it because it’s a secret.

The game is like countless other platfomers with various challenging levels, fruit to collect and monsters to subdue. It does depart from other platformers apart from having a weapon from the start. Yep you have your trusty never ending supply of axes to hurl at snails, fishes and so forth. Powerups include armour bonuses.

Graphics are modern and are large enough for a small screen and music like all mobile phone games is limited.

The controls are assigned appropriately considering the number of moves you can make. Eg, jumping, climbing , axe throwing etc.. However there is some awkwardness when you have to rush movements. It even has a save function which helps as some of the levels are quite long.

Game play is generally pretty good. The level of difficulty has been implemented in a good fashion, it increases in a consistent fashion.

There’s also a time limit which each level has to be completed. This is appropriate because it can be a simple game to complete but difficult if you want to collect everything.

The save function works but you have to start at the beginning of the level. Not much of a problem.

It is playable in most environments without attracting too much attention.

    Issues

The first thing you notice when the game started is that the volume is defaulted to FULLY LOUD. This is very annoying since its not exactly the most catchy theme song out there.

I do not have any Dragon Island cheats or hints.

    Summary

We rate this game a 7/10.

Dragon Island on the whole is a pretty good game made for a mobile phone. If you’re into this sort of game genre it will satisfy. If you’re not its still worth getting for entertainment value.

I believe this sort of game would work well on a Nintendo Gameboy ! The basics are there but they would need to work out how to differentiate it from the other platformers …

I haven’t finished the game yet but probably will in the near future.

    NAME: Cannons
    COMPANY: Macrospace
    PLATFORM: JAVA
    GENRE: Cannon
    SIZE: 66 KB
    TEST PHONE: LG U8630
    RATING: 1/10

The premise is that you control a canon and have to blast away your enemies.
The concept is not new and in this form it still doesn’t have that unique factor that will attract masses to it.

You essentially control the ‘power’ and angle of the cannon bearing in mind wind direction and strength. Controls are fine and easy to get used to.

They have added in a power up feature but it still doesn’t make it a great game.

Graphics are pretty poor compared to most. If it had better graphics and perhaps bigger graphics and more ‘special animations’ that set it apart from the rest.

There is a problem with the AI regarding the impact of wind and angle on your shot. All the other better features of the game can’t override this fundamental issue.

    Summary

We rate this game a 1/10.

Cannons is just another ‘cannon’ game. It’s difficult to play because the AI is flawed and even with the flaw there’s still nothing else to recommend it.

    NAME: Ancient Empires

    PLATFORM: JAVA
    GENRE: Stragety

    RATING: 9/10

Ancient Empires is mobile phone game by made by Macrospace. This is a real time strategy game for your mobile phone.

You play as King Galamar of the Kingdom of Thorin who has to thwart his twin brother, Valadorn who has suddenly turned evil.

This is a game that captures the essence of a real time strategy game. The fact that it plays so well on a mobile phone is a credit to the developer.

Those who play Warcraft (Blizzard) will find themselves at home with this game. You start off with the basic characters and have to build an army to defend your kingdom.

Believe it or not they have even incorporated a story line into the game not just a written foreword to set the mood. That said many games don’t have interesting prologues but this one makes a passing grade.

Back to the game, you have the choice of buying set pieces summarised as follows:

    – Soldiers who can collect money and attack.
    – Lizard warriors who can move great distances and have defensive bonus if in water.
    – Wizards can raise skeletons for extra attack turns.
    – Spiders have a special ability decrease defence to other units.
    – Wisps that increase attack stats.
    – Catapults do high damage but on from a distance.
    – Golems that have high attacks and defence but slow movers.
    – Archers who can attack from a distance but weak defence.
    – Wyvern’s are the ultimate class which has high everything.

As an added feature all your character stats vary according to terrain. Some like mountains and villages give a defence bonus and others like forests give bonuses to certain characters.

There doesn’t appear to be too many levels to the game, 7 in all I think (which is fine cause it is only for a mobile phone) but the difficulty level jumps dramatically at level 4. Also the ability to save at any point is perfect.

On the musical side there a several tunes which is good. The graphics while don’t look state of the art they still look modern.

A minor issue with the game is that the enemy also gets the same type of units. It would would have been nice to at least change the names and graphic of the units.

The main issues I have with Ancient Empires is the slow accumulation of funds and the sudden step up in difficulty on the middle levels.

    Summary

We rate this game a 9/10.

Ancient Empires as a real time strategy game for a mobile phone they have done a pretty good job! The game play is good, controls easy to master the action can be saved at any point.

I reckon its the benchmark real time strategy game for mobile devices. I find it hard to imagine a game like this on a phone could be so good.

Must have game to pass the time anywhere you can imagine. Even if you not into these style of games give it a go – you might be convinced.

Close to perfect game on its genre for a phone.*See bottom of page.

  • Game Review – Aleste

    null

    COMPANY: AIKY & Square Enix
    PLATFORM: JAVA
    GENRE: Forward scrolling shooter
    SIZE: 76 KB
    TEST PHONE: LG U8630
    RATING: 6/10

Aleste by is essentially a forward scrolling shooter game. There isn’t a background story given for the game – which is unusual.

The basic premise is that you control a flying craft or plane of some sort and shoot down as many alien and alien bosses as possible. There are a ton of things to shoot, avoid and of course to collect numerous powerups.

It’s reminiscent of past games like 1942 or Raiden of the last decade in look and feel. So its not the most original in concept and not implemented nearly as well as its predecessors.

Controls are easy to master since it has an auto-fire option. As you can guess pressing the fire button many time on a phone would be pretty annoying especially when there are so many things to shoot at.

Essentially you use the navi-key for forward and backwards and sideways. The center button or 0 can to used to turn auto fire on or off.

The game play is monotonous but perfectly adequate for an escape from the boredom of public transport.

The graphics are simple and reasonable but it does look old school compared to newer titles. Your space ship and enemies bar the bosses are too small.

There isn’t much sound to talk about only a relatively simple MIDI theme playing in the background.

OK soundtrack whilst playing but no fire of destruction sounds. It would be nice to hear your enemies being blown to bits. So based on this you definitely don’t need sound to play this game.

The levels in the game seem to go on forever and there is no discernible increase in difficulty. Even the bosses are easy to wipe out once you understand the games AI.

In fact Space Impact II on the Nokia phones is a better and more satisfying game.

Hints: Selecting the right powerup and subsequent compatible powerups are very important. That said it only takes one level to reach the max for a particular power so nothing to worry about.

    Summary

We rate this game a 6/10.

Aleste is a perfect mindless shooter you can play on the train or anywhere else for that matter. However only if you truly have nothing better to do.

Buy only if you have small kids to keep entertained or the price is really low.

  • Motorola V9 (RAZR2) Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Motorola V9 mobile phone review. The V9 was released in late 2007 as the successor to the V3xx which in turn was the replacement for the V3 and V3i.  The V series phones from Motorola have always looked good and the V9 and its twin the V8 are no different.  They are great looking phones anyone would be happy to own. There have been many version of the same phone over the years the last one being the V9x which included on-board A-GPS for navigation. The V9 is the 3G version of the latest V series phones.  It features large dual 240 x 320 screens with external touch controls  and the slimmest and arguably best looking flip phone or clam shell design on the market.  It is packed with technology including 500Mhz CPU. Quality of construction was as good with excellent attention to detail and materials. The V9 however does have issues.  It uses Motorola's ancient OS that has been enhanced over the years to cater for more functionality.  Even worse due to the horrible way the mobile network companies 'customise' the phone for their network ruins the experience for the user.  For example some models do not have a flight mode or others can't change the soft key functions or even worse limit functionality on the external touch buttons.  So if you have problems blame the network not Motorola. Despite all that if you get an network free version you will be impressed by the high quality screens, phone speed and usability.  However you will be disappointed at the un-logical menu structure.  The standard browser is annoying so get a model with Opera installed or download it your self.   Some mobile networks also place a limitation on 'push email' functionality which again hurts the reputation of the V9.  The v9 does not have a FM radio either. Regardless of network the thing that probably hurts the v9 the most is the difficult way to install software unless from the network provider.  Also the limitations of installing simple things such as new themes is disappointing.  If you want customization then you need to visit the Motorola hacking sites for the instructions.  If you happy with the basic functionality then you will be happy that is what this phone is good at. Overall this is a great looking phone with some issues.  Mind you when we reviewed the V9 we didn't encounter software related bugs that everyone seems to be reporting but we got one that didn't have a flight mode.  Great phone for talk, text and internet if you get a network free one.

Welcome to the Motorola V8 mobile phone review. The V8 was released in late 2007 as the successor to the V3 and V3i. The V series phones from Motorola have always looked good and the V8 and its twin the V9 are no different. They are great looking phones anyone would be happy to own.  The gold and snake skin V8 are particularly impressive. The V8 is the GSM only version of the latest V series phones. It features large dual 240 x 320 screens with external touch controls and the slimmest and arguably best looking flip phone or clam shell design on the market. It is packed with technology including 500Mhz CPU. Quality of construction was as good with excellent attention to detail and materials. The V8 has less issues than the V9because it uses an entirely different operating system.  The system is prettier to look at and much more logical than the V9 OS.  However again many report the certain versions of the phone - those 'customized' and locked to certain networks have the most problems.  Due to the horrible way the mobile network companies 'customize' the phone for their network ruins the experience for the user. Like the V9 if you get an network free version you will be impressed by the high quality screens, phone speed and usability.  It's GSM only so in certain parts of the world you can get data but at very slow speeds.  The V8 does not have a FM radio either. Regardless of network the thing that probably hurts the v8 the most is the difficult way to install software unless from the network provider. Also the limitations of installing simple things such as new themes is disappointing. If you want customization then you need to visit the Motorola hacking sites for the instructions. • Sony Ericsson w300i Review

    hyp4mhz
Welcome to the Sony Ericsson W300i mobile phone review. We liked the look of this phone so decided to do a review. The W300i is classed as an entry level music phone. The W in front of the number indicates that this is a music phone. So you can expect the phone to work primarily as a music player as opposed to designed primarily for calls or SMS. In fact its got the Sony Walkman logo on the front cover! It's a light all plastic phone with features you wouldn't expect in this price category. Aside from the bonus stuff standard functionality it really is quite complete although low-spec. Available in a variety of colours, we choice a pearl white one because we feel it's the nicest colour. We reckon its a great music phone for the price. But what about its phone functions? Battery Life The battery life of this phone is very good easily lasting 3 days with an estimated 8 hours of music and radio via headphones and speaker every so often, bluetooth file transfers and a few calls. Left on stand by you can expect at least 7-10 days but probably longer. So music fans can listen to music or radio all day and more without needing to recharge. The phone can be charged via USB cable - which was an unexpected bous. Speed The phone is fast - scrolling through menus you not only get fast options but also fancy animated graphics that make you wonder why you need a super computer to make Windows Vista look any good and certainly makes the iPod interface very look old. Construction. The W300i is an all plastic phone that manages to look modern and more expensive than you would expect - on the outside. However when you hold the phone that image of expense disappears. Holding the phone reveals some creaking panels and opening the flip reveals cheaper but sturdy looking plastics. The keypad has been designed for style rather than usability. Unlike higher range phones the keys move around in their slots. The numeric keys are circular round with a translucent clear/reflective silver with orange back lighting. The function keys are the standard Sony Ericsson configuration but are in Walkman style rather than the normal Z or K series. So it doesn't have the usual green and red phone buttons. The menu key is recessed so you'll often activate other features before pressing the correct key. The keys are on the small side for normal adults but teenagers would probably find it acceptable. The clam design seems sturdy to look at but the display section on the flip reveals a bit of leeway and that it is either all open or all closed. Colours available are black or white with silver highlights. The white one looks better than the black we feel. There is a bright orange multi-function button on the left and the infrared port is on the right, the earphone, multi-purpose including earphone connector is at the bottom. Currently available colors include shadow black, shimmering white. The memory card slot is hidden under the battery cover. Overall it looks great but when finally getting your hands on it - it doesn't feel as good at it looks. Functionality The W300i although the bias is to music functionality has all the essential features that you'd expect in a mobile phone in 2007. It has a usable web browser, calendar, camera, video, games, photo contacts, messaging and so forth. However none of the options are comprehensive compared to it music features. That said, it also has quite a few unexpected but desirable features! For example if you're a parent you can limit type and who the phone can call. It can also divert calls from people you don't want to talk to directly to your voice mail. It has a phone software update service - so you don't need to go to a shop to update. A voice dialling or voice answer, a voice recorder and so forth. As for customisation you can change themes and background independently, use profiles, groups and navigation key short-cuts - all the usual stuff you would expect. The only complaint if that - is that there is no way to turn off the animations. We discovered a bonus flashing light on the right when its low on batteries! When using the USB cable the memory phone can be used a an external storage drive - bonus. Most of the functions are menu driven so lots of clicking and selecting required we did not bother trying to find out how many messages or appointments etc... although lots of 'hidden' options because it would have taken too long - besides its a music phone! Connectivity It has the complete set of options bluetooth, USB and infrared. Unfortunately the Sony Ericsson software needs to be installed on your PC before you can access all its features, including the drivers for USB. On the phone itself there is the Remote Control Application which allows you to control other bluetooth devices like projectors, media players and PC. Although we didn't try this function it clearly an unexpected bonus. MP3 and video/sound The W300i performs very well as a music player and as a radio. The Walkman features all the expected options on a modern player with playlists, sorting by album, artist, song name, file name, various repeats and so forth. Video options are limited though. It has various eq. settings like trade marked Mega Bass but the equaliser only works in ear phone mode. In loud speaker mode the sound quality is very average and almost flat. The FM radio rates a mention as it has RDS capability. RDS - Radio Data System is used by various stations that either show the name of the station or perhaps the name of the song that is being played. Some radio stations use it to promote various shows. So when you use the W300i you get to see the name of the station or whatever else they decide to include. But that's not all it also has AF (Alternate Frequency) which allows the radio to retune its self to any other frequency that the same station is being broadcasted on. Useful if you live in a marginal area and don't want the same station. The earphones that come the W300i are the same Sony Walkman series so they are very good quality. In fact these are the benchmark earphones we use in reviews! They sound great especially combined with the Mega Bass setting. There are the extras: VideoDJ to edit you videos on the phone. PhotoDJ to edit your pictures on the phone MusciDJ allows you to make your own music or tones. All these extras are easy to use. All up it's excellent considering the price. It's not perfect though and a few criticisms like the radio functionality should be included as part of the Walkman feature. The colours of the feature should be changeable with a visualiser of some sort on either external of internal screens. Lastly there needs to be a function on that allows you to change playlists and forth on the external screen when the phone is closed. Web Browser The included browser is a Sony Ericsson version and works OK. You can browse the internet using GPRS but it is slow compared to 3G offerings. The camera/video recorder What the phone excels in is music and accordingly the camera and video application is very poor. It offers a few high end features like timer and light settings but that's it. Its not disappointing because it clearly not designed as a camera phone. However in 2007 we expect a full 1.3MP as the minimum. In camera mode the highest resolution is 640x480. Video resolution on only covers a max of 176x144 pixels. Quality is output is expected poor. The specs say 4x zoom, but in reality it is only available on the smallest image setting. All of this was expected. So don't get this phone for its imaging performance. The screens The screens on the W300i look good in specifications but in reality very average. The external screen is a 2 colours - bright orange and dark orange. It is easy to read and large enough for most eyes. The internal screen although capable of many colours is not very high resolution. it compares to the Gameboy SP screen in look. We thought it was slightly disappointing but not something that counts heavily against it since it is a music phone. Call quality and network reception Voice call quality is very good with proper volume and clear. The sound though is a tad flat. It seems to be able to maintain a signal even in marginal areas better than say the Samsung mobiles. Issues Everything on the phone works and we did not experience and system crashes or freezes. As we said before the function to change playlists should be available on the external screen as well - being a music phone. The W300i does not have a flight mode that you would expect, that is as a profile. What you have to do is turn off the phone and turn it back on selecting the Walkman only option. (Larger sites clearly don't test their phones properly.) Certainly an odd way of doings things compared to other manufacturers. Sony Ericsson software for Windows The software that comes with the phone looks good. It includes the PC Suite, Quicktime, Adobe Photoshop Album SE and the Disc2Phone. The included USB cable is really handy. The installation of the software requires the latest .NET 1,1 stuff so rebooting your PC up to 3 times may be necessary. One odd thing we noticed is when trying to move a file from the root directory to another folder - we couldn't do it. It had be be done when the phone was in drive mode. We are used to being able to move files about without changing settings. All up its a easy package to use if you just go with the flow. Trying to think about how to do things only makes it more complicated. Just press the buttons. Network You can buy the phone outright but it is currently tied to Optus and a pre-paid phone. Summary The Sony Ericsson W300i is a great music phone. Even its physical twin the Z510i is not as good. It looks cool and made reasonably well. It offers some great features unexpected in this price bracket but they are balanced out by the lack of other stuff eg. lower resolution screen. The sales package included a all you need including a USB cable and 256MG M2 memory card and the Walkman headphones/wired hands free cables. The W300i compared to an iPod Nano we feel the winner is still the the phone. Sound quality is just as good and it has more features than an iPod. So if you've been trying to decide whether to buy an iPod or a new mobile this is a good solution. Unless you plan on using iTunes... Our recommendation? Great package and reasonably price - just remember it is primarily a music and entertainment phone. If you buy on that basis you'll love it.
